Description:
OVERVIEW:
We are seeking a motivated individual to train as an Apprentice Sewing Machinist. This is a fantastic opportunity for someone who is passionate about furniture making and eager to learn the intricacies of the trade. As an apprentice, you will have the chance to work alongside experienced craftsmen, honing your skills and gaining valuable hands-on experience in all aspects of sewing.
You will be based in Chesterfield at a company who is a renowned name in the furniture manufacturing industry, known for their commitment to quality craftsmanship and timeless design. With decades of experience, they pride themselves on creating bespoke furniture pieces that reflect their dedication to excellence and attention to detail. They have evolved from a traditional re-upholstery setting to what is today, a full upholstery, furnishing and manufacturing facility which provides specialised furnishings for all commercial and public sectors.
Covering both UK and International sales, they are specialists in furniture design, manufacturing and upholstering for domestic, show homes and commercial projects.
Duties:
- Operate Sewing Machines: Learn to operate industrial sewing machines, including lockstitch, overlock, and cover stitch machines, ensuring efficient and safe use. You’ll be trained in various stitching techniques essential for creating high-quality sewn items.
- Cut and Sew Materials: Follow detailed patterns and templates to cut fabrics accurately and sew them into beautifully finished products. You will develop skills in handling various textiles, including heavy fabrics and delicate materials, ensuring precision in every stitch.
- Quality Assurance: Conduct thorough inspections of finished products to ensure they meet Home Curtains’ stringent quality standards. Learn to identify and correct common issues such as misaligned stitches, fabric defects, and uneven hems.
- Setup and Preparation: Assist in the setup and preparation of sewing tasks. This includes threading machines, organising fabric and materials, and ensuring all necessary tools and equipment are in place and in good working condition.
- Fabric Handling and Care: Gain expertise in handling different types of fabrics, understanding their properties, and learning the best practices for cutting, sewing, and maintaining them. This includes knowledge of fabric grain, stretch, and drape.
- Workspace Maintenance: Maintain a clean and organised workspace to ensure efficient production. Learn the importance of workplace organisation and safety protocols to prevent accidents and ensure a productive environment.
- Collaboration: Work closely with design and production teams to understand project requirements and ensure that all products meet client specifications and company standards. You will also assist in modifying and adjusting designs based on customer feedback.
- Customer Orders: Assist in fulfilling custom orders, including measuring and cutting fabric to specific sizes, ensuring that customer specifications are accurately met. This involves direct communication with clients to ensure satisfaction.

WHAT TRAINING WILL THE APPRENTICE TAKE AND WHAT QUALIFICATION WILL THE APPRENTICE GET AT THE END?
During your Standard Level 2 Furniture Manufacturer apprenticeship programme you will receive training both off and on the job. You will be required to attend WEBS Training on either a day or block release basis, the rest of the time you will be within the workplace. You will learn the underpinning knowledge that runs alongside your practical elements of the training. You will use a wide range of techniques whilst you complete a practical project. WEBS Training aim to build on the skills you already have so you reach your full potential both personally and professionally.
Training will be provided in all areas of Furniture Manufacturing to ensure you are capable of creating practical and bespoke furniture using both traditional and modern techniques and materials to produce aesthetically pleasing and fit for purpose products.
If you have already achieved GCSE maths and English at Grade 4/C or above or have equivalent qualification you will be exempt from undertaking Functional Skills, however English and maths support will be provided for all apprentices throughout the length of their programme.
