  • Familiarity with the archaeology and/or history of Arizona and New Mexico.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely using both written and verbal skills.
  • Ability to multi-task within flexible/fluid schedules and travel to meet project needs.
  • Valid driver’s license with acceptable violation history

Responsibilities:

Are you looking to join a growing cultural resources team to work on exciting archaeological projects? We are looking for a Field Director to help manage our field crews in our Tempe, Arizona office as part of our Environmental Services Line, Cultural Resources Group in the Western Rocky Mountain Division. As part of our team, you will collaborate with our established PIs and network of archaeologists across the nation. This is a full-time salaried position with health care and retirement benefits.
This role will manage all aspects of cultural projects to ensure that they are safely completed on time and within scope and budget, while monitoring progress and performance against the project plan. They will troubleshoot and recommend or resolve operational problems and minimize delays. They will be responsible for resource management, project scheduling, budgets and forecasts, and working with external vendors, subcontractors or contractors. They will conduct meetings and prepare reports to communicate the status of the project to the project team and client. They will set priorities, assign tasks, and coordinate project staff to meet project targets and milestones, and may have responsibilities to communicate with the client and deliver work products to the satisfaction of client. They will coordinate efforts with Authorized Project Reviewer (APR) to make sure that the APR has the opportunity to engage throughout the project, particularly at critical junctures. They will also be involved in approving invoices, preparing change orders, and collections.

Essential Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Manage all aspects of a small to medium sized project.
  • Works with client and/or internal program managers to define project scope, schedule and budget.
  • Design, communicate, and implement a project plan for completing the project.
  • Lead safety efforts including preparation and compliance with approved safety plan.
  • Take action to resolve operational problems and minimize delays.
  • Identify, develop, and gather the resources to complete the project. This may include preparing calculations, designs, reports and work specifications; developing project schedules, budgets and forecasts; and selecting materials, equipment, project staff, and external contractors.
  • Partner with other departments or offices to secure specialized resources for the project.
  • Conduct meetings and prepare reports to communicate the status of the project.
  • Set priorities, assign tasks, and coordinates project staff to meet project targets and milestones.
  • Coordinates with APR to ensure appropriate oversight is in place and sufficient time allowed for reviews of all critical junctures.
  • Coordinates with accounting for financial management of business intelligence, invoicing and collections.
  • Develop understanding and be aware of project-related risk. Be familiar with company risk policies.
  • Lead safety efforts for team and ensure team follows safety rules and guidelines. Responsible for creating and modeling a safe work environment; demonstrates safety practices. Promote pre-task planning for all projects.
  • Promote continuous quality monitoring and improvement on projects.
  • Work within applicable cultural resource regulations and laws in the state of Arizona (e.g., Arizona Antiquities Act) and at the federal level (e.g., Section 106).

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Anthropology, Environmental Science, Ecology, Geology, or related field and a minimum of 5 years’ related experience. Or, in lieu of a degree, a minimum of 9 years’ related experience.
  • Familiarity with the archaeology and/or history of Arizona and New Mexico.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely using both written and verbal skills.
  • Ability to multi-task within flexible/fluid schedules and travel to meet project needs.
  • Valid driver’s license with acceptable violation history.

Preferred Certification:

  • Project Management Professional (PMP), or Registered Archaeologist (RA) or Registered Professional Archaeologist (RPA), or other discipline-related certification relevant to the type of services and projects being managed.
  • Graduate degree in Archaeology, Anthropology, or closely related field (M.A., M.S.) and a minimum of 2 years’ related experience.
  • Secretary of the Interior (SOI) qualification
