Description:

JOB SUMMARY

Reporting to the Assistant Director for Residential Engagement, the Area Coordinator (AC) is responsible for community and student development in the university’s residence halls. The Area Coordinator (AC) provides leadership and supervision for up to 2 Graduate Assistants and up to 16 Resident Advisors in a residential area of approximately up to 600 students. The AC is responsible for creating a caring and inclusive environment for residents and staff members that is defined by a genuine sense of belonging and memorable moments.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor’s degree required.
One to three years of related experience.
Supervision of residence hall staff or other staff members in college or university residence halls.
Demonstrated commitment to student development, persistence, and success.
Ability to interact effectively with students, staff, and campus partners from diverse backgrounds.
Understanding of and commitment to principles of social justice and inclusion.
Knowledge of quality customer service practices and specifically how to successfully address student and parent concerns.
Excellent communication (written and verbal), interpersonal skills, and attention to detail.
Demonstrated understanding of the educational environment at a diverse, private, urban institution.
Experience addressing individual student and community behavioral matters; Ability to think critically and effectively plan and organize work.
Ability to exercise considerable judgment and discretion in establishing and maintaining good working relationships.
Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite including Word, Excel, and Outlook.
Ability to demonstrate a commitment to service excellence embodying Simmon’s core values, mission, and vision in every aspect of the role working with students, faculty, staff, and visitors.
A positive and professional demeanor is expected.
Willingness to work irregular and flexible hours.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Master’s degree in College Student Personnel, Higher Education, Counseling, or a related field.
A minimum of 1 year of graduate or postgraduate Residence Life experience, knowledge of StarRez or other similar housing database software programs.
Knowledge of Maxient or other conduct database software programs.
Experience working directly with Living-Learning Communities or Theme Floors and/or building faculty partnerships.
Experience enhancing students’ academic achievement through collaborative efforts, or programmatic development.
Demonstrated commitment to student development and educational programming; including, but not limited to: advising student groups, providing leadership training, and ongoing development. Current membership and/or active involvement in related professional organizations such as ACPA, NASPA, or ACUHO-I.
Experience serving as a hearing officer for student conduct/judicial cases.

Responsibilities:

Serve as a representative of the Residence Life department on division and university-wide committees.
Collaborate with other university offices, such as Facilities, C&W (Custodial), Public Safety, Student Engagement and Leadership, Student Financial Services, Dining, Office of Accessibility Services, Center for Global Education, Spiritual Life, and Athletics.
Participate in presentations and panel discussions for Admissions events; Other duties as assigned.
