QUALIFICATIONS:
- High School Diploma or GED
- ASL Interpreter Certification is required, along with ability to fulfill periodic recertification requirements
- At least 2 years’ related experience that includes ASL instruction as well as translation services
- Experience interacting with developmentally disabled adults is required
- Proficiency in office technology, including MS Office and virtual meeting software, e.g., Zoom
- Comfort performing interpretation in a variety of settings, e.g., group home, community outings, Zoom meetings
- Ability to adjust work hours as needed to accommodate resident care needs
- Ability to follow ethical protocols that protect the confidentiality of information
Schedule: Part-time, 3 hrs./week (with flexibility)
This rate of pay serves as a good faith estimate. Actual pay is based on a number of factors which may include a candidate’s qualifications, skills, competencies, experience and work location. The salary range or rate listed does not include any differential pay or other forms of compensation, such as the value of benefits, which may be applicable to this position.
Responsibilities:
- Provide onsite support and ASL instruction to the deaf and hearing-impaired individuals in our group homes for developmentally disabled adults.
- Engage the deaf or hearing-impaired individual to facilitate communication between them and staff members. Query the individual regarding any health-related symptoms, changes he/she may be experiencing to help determine necessary course of follow-up action by staff.
- Provide translation services as needed for medical/psychiatric appointments, or hospitalizations via Zoom or other virtual meeting room software.
- Advocate on behalf of individual and/or facilitate communication with members of the hearing community during outside activities.
- Train staff members in ASL to enhance their ability to engage with deaf and hearing-impaired individuals and more accurately interpret meaning when communicating.
