Position Description
The McGill University Department of Medicine, Division of General Internal Medicine in the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences is inviting applications for a full-time position at the rank of Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor (Clinical). The professorial rank will be determined according to the candidate’s qualifications and experience. This will be a Contract Academic Staff position and does not confer eligibility for tenure. This position is conditional on the Institution successfully obtaining a PEM (i.e. physician permit) for this position.
The incumbent will be the Director of the Division of General Internal Medicine of the McGill University Health Centre (MUHC). Within the MUHC, the Division of General Internal Medicine spans the Glen site (Royal Victoria Hospital), the Montreal General Hospital, and Hôpital Lachine. The MUHC is one of McGill’s major teaching hospitals affiliated with the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at Canada’s internationally renowned McGill University, located in the vibrant and multicultural city of Montreal, in the province of Quebec.

The MUHC Division of General Internal Medicine is highly committed to excellence in clinical care and innovation, research, and medical education with a rich history and an international profile in many areas. Division members are international leaders in cardiovascular, obstetrical medicine, quality improvement, peri-operative medicine, diabetes, osteoporosis and medical education research.
The Division includes over 35 full-time academic faculty members delivering care in 3 busy downtown emergency rooms, most responsible physician services for over 120 inpatient beds, a new/thriving day hospital and active ambulatory care practice.

The successful candidate will be a transformational leader who, as MUHC Director of the General Internal Medicine, will draw on strong interpersonal skills to inspire best practices and innovation. The ideal candidate will bring a track-record of success in academic leadership with the ability to foster excellence in teaching, patient care, and research within the Division and will do so in collaboration with the McGill Division Director of the General Internal Medicine and sister hospital General Internal Medicine Division Directors (JGH and SMH).
The successful candidate will provide leadership for the clinical and educational missions of the Division and Department, promote independent and collaborative research and fulfill administrative responsibilities at the institutional, university, regional and provincial levels, where appropriate.

Qualifications and Education Requirements

  • Hold an MD degree, and must hold or be eligible for, licensure in the province of Quebec;
  • Have completed training in General Internal Medicine;
  • Be certified by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (or equivalent);
  • Hold certification by the Collège des médecins du Québec;
  • Have relevant leadership experience;
  • Demonstrate accomplishment in General Internal Medicine in research, teaching and/or leadership;
  • Have clinical expertise suited to tertiary hospital settings;
  • Have experience in training students, residents, and fellows in clinical settings;
  • Bilingual language skills (French and English) are preferred, or a commitment to acquire the necessary language skills to practice medicine in Quebec. Candidates should be able to interact in English and in French with patients, families, and health care professionals.
