DEPARTMENT OF PEDIATRIC – DIVISION OF PEDIATRIC HEMATOLOGY ONCOLOGY

Reference: C1-241203
Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences – Departments of Pediatrics, Division of
Pediatric Hematology Oncology, Montreal Children’s Hospital (MCH), McGill University
Health Centre (MUHC)
Position description
The McGill University Department of Pediatrics, Division of Pediatric Hematology-Oncology in the Faculty
of Medicine and Health Sciences is inviting applications for a full-time Contract Academic Staff position as
an Academic Clinician at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor (Clinical) based at the Montreal
Children’s Hospital (MCH) of the McGill University Health Centre (MUHC). The professorial rank will be
determined according to the candidate’s qualifications and experience. This will be a Contract Academic
Staff position and does not confer eligibility for tenure.
The Department of Pediatrics is a leader in academic medicine. Our educational and research missions
support excellent and innovative clinical programs and research across our teaching hospitals. The
Montreal Children’s Hospital of the McGill University Health Centre is one of McGill’s major teaching
hospitals affiliated with the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at Canada’s internationally renowned
McGill University, located in the vibrant and multicultural city of Montreal, in the province of Quebec. All
pediatric medical and surgical subspecialties are represented at the MCH.
The Division of Pediatric Hematology-Oncology provides diagnostic, treatment, long-term follow-up, and
family-centered care to children and adolescents with cancer through an interdisciplinary team approach.
As such, the Division provides the most advanced clinical care through clinical research; the Division is
also a founding member and active participant of the Children’s Oncology Group, the world’s largest
childhood cancer research organization.
The Division is currently staffed with ten Hematologists-Oncologists who offer a full-range of services
within the discipline, and who on average see 90-100 new cancer diagnoses per year including 15-20 new
leukemias per year. The malignant hematology program is a longstanding member the Children’s
Oncology Group. All of our patients have access to clinical molecular analyses and our division is involved
in multidisciplinary and multicenter review of these molecular findings via onco-genomics tumor boards
to ensure optimal therapy interventions. Our hematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT) program
performs an average of 15-20 transplants annually (2/3 autologous and 1/3 allogeneic) for patients with
both malignant hematological conditions and a myriad of non-malignant hematological, metabolic or
immune disorders.
In addition to our 12-bed inpatient hematology-oncology ward, we run an inpatient hematology consult
service and programs for non-malignant hematologic disorders, including thalassemia and sickle cell
disease (~300 patients). There are 3 dedicated outpatient general hematology clinics weekly as well as
weekly dedicated clinics in sickle cell disease, hemostasis and thrombosis.
Our current staff has expertise in neuro-oncology, leukemia/lymphoma, hematopoietic stem cell
transplant, solid tumors, hemostasis, thrombosis, hemoglobinopathies, long-term follow up/survivorship,
and cancer genetics. There is a very active clinical research group participating in collaborative group and
early phase studies.
There is a dedicated combined pediatric and adult non-malignant hematology research team (i.e.,
physicians, research nurses, and clinical research assistants) with current participation in gene therapy
trials, industry trials and registries. The division has a Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada
fellowship training program and actively participates in teaching medical students and residents from
many specialties.
Job Duties
The Division of Hematology-Oncology is seeking an individual with specialized training and/or significant
clinical experience and/or interest in the field of malignant or non-malignant hematology. In addition to
providing clinical care, it is anticipated that the successful candidate will participate in laboratory activities
such as interpretation of peripheral and bone marrow smears as well as promote clinical/translational
research.
The successful candidate will be an active physician member of the Division of Hematology-Oncology at
the Montreal Children’s Hospital (MUHC); they will share on-call duties, in-patient service, outpatient
clinic duties, teaching, and divisional administrative responsibilities with other members of the Division of
Hematology-Oncology. All members of the Department of Pediatrics are expected to provide clinical
teaching and supervision to undergraduate medical students, residents and fellows, and to pursue
scholarly activities in hematology/oncology. In addition, all members are expected to contribute to
academic rounds and administrative committees, as well as being involved in all aspects of McGill’s
academic mission. The incumbent will also be involved in a variety of teaching, research, and advocacy
efforts within the hospital setting and beyond.
McGill faculty members are expected to contribute to service activities within their units, the University,
and the wider scholarly community. A demonstrated commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion is
also expected.
