Summary:
Responsible for overseeing Athletic Department and University compliance with NCAA, Patriot League, and University regulations. Interacts with multiple offices on campus, internal Athletic Department staff members, coaches and student-athletes, alumni, friends of the University and prospective student-athletes to oversee compliance. The Assistant AD for Compliance acts with minimal supervision. This position reports directly to the Associate Athletic Director/Student-Athlete Well-Being. The Assistant AD for Compliance is directly responsible for overseeing student-athlete eligibility matters, administering NCAA and Patriot League forms and coordinating implementation of all compliance policies and procedures. This position provides reports on activities to the President of the University, the Faculty Athletics Representative, the Director of Athletics, the Senior Woman Administrator for the Athletic Department and the Associate Athletic Director for Business. Reporting to this position are the Assistant Director of Compliance, and head coaches as assigned.
Essential Functions:

  • Monitors interpretations of NCAA, Patriot League, University, and Federal regulations to coaches, athletic department staff members, other university personnel, student-athletes, student and “boosters” (outside athletic support groups).
  • Monitors programs, workshops, and information sessions for all above mentioned constituencies to review NCAA, Patriot League, University and Federal regulations on a regular basis.
  • Serves as liaison to numerous campus constituencies through these efforts. Proper achievement of this duty should prevent the University from committing any major violations and should limit the number of secondary violations the University commits to a number below 5 annually.
  • This duty is accomplished with minimal supervision, but with frequent reports, both formal and informal, to the Director of Athletics and Faculty Athletics Rep/Patriot League Policy Committee Rep.
  • Oversees the entire student-athlete recruiting process that includes a coherent program which ensures full compliance with all recruiting regulations.
  • Authorizes university-paid visits to campus by prospective student-athletes; oversees collection of credentials needed for admissions of incoming student-athletes on campus and through telephonic, e-mail and written communication.
  • Monitors the awarding of athletic financial aid to ensure that institutional and NCAA maximums are not exceeded.
  • Proper monitoring of the student-athlete recruiting process will minimize the number of secondary violations and assist in bringing the most capable student-athletes to American University, both academically and athletically.
  • The monitoring of the recruiting process is accomplished with little supervision, but is subject to annual review by the Patriot League Assistant Commissioner for Compliance and the Director of Athletics.
  • Oversees the completion of all paperwork required by NCAA, Patriot League, University and Federal regulations to ensure compliance with their regulations.
  • The completion of all required paperwork is supervised by the Director Athletics in a summary fashion.
  • Monitors current student-athlete eligibility through working with the Office of the Registrar to confirm that all student-athletes are enrolled in at least the minimum number of credits to maintain eligibility.
  • Works with the Dean’s offices and with Athletic Department staff and coaches to verify that all student-athletes are following NCAA, Patriot League, University and Department regulations pertaining to eligibility.
  • Proper monitoring of student-athlete eligibility will ensure that the University does not commit any NCAA or Patriot League violations in the conduct of its athletic program.
  • The Faculty Athletic Representative supervises the monitoring of student-athlete eligibility by participating in the ultimate certification steps for each returning student-athlete.

Salary Range:

  • $58,263-$93,222 annually.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work:

  • 35 hours per week.
  • Nights and weekends are required at times.

Supervisory Responsibility:

  • This position directly supervises one full-time employee.

Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • 5-8 years of relevant experience.
  • Effective computer skills and effective written and oral communication skills.
  • Requires understanding of NCAA compliance.

Preferred Education and Experience:

  • Masters degree.
  • Prefer athletic department experience as a collegiate athletic administrator, a student-athlete or support staff.
  • Post-baccalaureate degree (Master’s, J.D., Ph.D.)

Additional Eligibility Qualifications:

  • The Assistant AD for Compliance will have to learn about admissions and financial aid processes at American, and be skilled at disseminating information about varied and diverse topics to a variety of constituencies.
