Assistant Controller
Under the direction of the Controller, the Assistant Controller will be responsible for the management of Forthright Properties and Forthright Ventures; including internal controls and regulatory/tax compliance.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support Controller in managing full cycle accounting for all operating, holding, and construction companies
  • Lead and supervise the Properties accounting team in the Finance department
  • Complete month-end and year-end accounting procedures including posting of standard journal entries, reconciling balance sheet accounts, and variance analysis
  • Perform monthly intercompany revenue and expense allocations
  • Support Controller in setting the priorities within accounting group
  • Ensure compliance with Provincial and Federal government reporting requirements and tax filings
  • Participate in the creation of operational and construction budgets and forecasts
  • Identifying and implementing process improvements which impact customer quality and influence internal operating efficiency
  • Support Controller in year-end audit and tax schedules for returns filed by external accountants
  • Provide advice and guidance on all accounting matters including financial systems, record keeping, analysis and reporting
  • Support the establishment and maintenance of internal controls
  • Support and collaborate with Controller on implementing strategic initiatives

Education and Experience

  • Advanced degree in professional accounting, CPA preferred or working toward degree
  • 5+ years of overall combined accounting and finance experience with demonstrated experience as a Financial Controller
  • 3+ years of overall experience leading and developing a team
  • Excellent accounting software user and administration skills
  • Thorough knowledge of relevant Federal, Provincial and local accounting principles and procedures
  • Advanced experience with general ledger functions, creating financial statements, and month-end/year-end processes
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office including Excel
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities including the ability to adapt to changing priorities and seamlessly shift focus
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Commitment to delivering excellence and to continuous process improvement
  • Excellent problem-solving skills that are expressed through critical thinking, independent decision-making, risk management, and process improvement
  • Experience in Construction and/or Property Management an asset
