A Day in the Life
The Assistant controller - South Africa will report into the Africa Controller and will provide direct leadership to the South Africa Controller’s staff to create and maintain a strong, consistent control environment with accurate and complete reporting based on USGAAP and local GAAP.
This position will demonstrate agility and strong communications skills while partnering across the Medtronic Organization, including South Africa, regional teams, shared service centre teams, centre of excellence teams, and BPO-partners. To be eligible for consideration of this position you must be located in Johannesburg, South Africa.

Responsibilities may include the following and other duties may be assigned:

  • Demonstrate a broad and in-depth understanding of Accounting and Finance processes and policies for USGAAP and local GAAP. Provide oversight and direction to the local Finance organization for all accounting and reporting matters, including the following to ensure compliance with accounting principles and Medtronic processes, legal and ethical standards: Primary in-country finance contact person for accounting and control topics (e.g., Revenue recognition), accountable for financial accuracy and completeness of the regional Balance Sheet and Profit & Loss accounts (US-GAAP and local GAAP) for all assigned legal entities in South Africa, responsible for creating and maintaining a strong and consistent control environment, responsible for local risk management.
  • Collaborate with relevant stakeholders on continuous process improvements, be able to lead local projects and collaborate in Europe, Middle East, Africa wide projects
  • Partner with the country finance, business, financial analysts, and enabling functions in a broad range of business issues, education of Medtronic financial policies/processes, and as needed provide guidance in the decision-making process.
  • Be able to lead local projects and collaborate in EMEA wide projects, collaborate on EMEA wide value-stream initiatives
  • Operate with the highest of ethical standards
  • Ability to operate and influence within a complex organization, build and develop a high performing controlling team
  • Provide direction to a team of two professional staff: provide direction and guidance to ensure efficient completion of personal and group objectives, conduct regular value-added performance discussions, provide development opportunities, and support career development

Required Knowledge and Experience:

  • Fluent in English, both spoken and written
  • Master’s Degree in Accounting or Finance
  • 8+ years experience in accounting or finance; previous people managing experience is preferred
  • Must have solid proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, especially Excel and PowerPoint
  • Comprehensive understanding of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP), South Africa regulations, and USGAAP
  • Strong influence management skills, inspire others to excel, communicate with impact and drive execution, successful track record of supervising, supporting, and developing a diverse financial team
