The Australian Signals Directorate (ASD) is the Australian Government’s foreign signals intelligence, offensive cyber and cyber security agency.
The ASD motto, Reveal their secrets - Protect our own, summarises our roles: we collect foreign intelligence; we provide advice and assistance on information and cyber security; and we conduct offensive cyber operations.
To achieve its mission, ASD requires people with strong integrity and a mix of specialist skills, adaptability, imagination, resilience and creativity. These are needed to out-think and out-imagine our adversaries and solve seemingly intractable technical and operational challenges. ASD is a place to work with other smart, skilled, and highly motivated people.

POSITION DESCRIPTION

The Australian Signals Directorate (ASD) is seeking a highly motivated and outcome driven Senior Executive Service (SES) Band 1 to fill the position of Assistant Director-General Standards, Technical Advice & Research, who will contribute to ASD’s mission and have relevant skills to work across and within ASD’s Australian Cyber Security Centre.
ASD is currently undergoing a significant transformation – doubling in size, expanding its presence both nationally and globally, and delivering significant new and enhanced intelligence and security capabilities for Australia. As a senior leader in ASD, you will have an important role leading this change.
As Assistant Director-General Active Cyber Defence, you will lead a Branch that performs a range of engagement and technical cyber security functions that build Australia’s cyber security resilience at a national level. You will assist the Australian Government’s efforts to improve and evolve Australia’s cyber security posture, as well as safeguard information systems and critical infrastructure from cyber threats, helping keen Australians and their data secure. The role is responsible for operational programs that will improve Australia’s resilience to cyber attacks. You will prepare and equip Australia’s most critical systems against cyber attacks by bringing collective capabilities together for system defence. You will lead the development and exercise of multi-tiered, nationally integrated, operational cyber incident response planning. You will achieve this in close partnership across Government and industry, and in line with legal and governance frameworks. (If interested in these anticipated roles please apply as part of Job ASD/070000/24).
You will have responsibility for leading a Branch through ASD’s current transformation, while continuing to deliver on the operational requirements of the position. You will work closely with international partners, and will manage an Australia-wide workforce.
As part of the Senior Leadership Group, you will play a key role in promoting and influencing a shared commitment to the strategic direction of ASD as the Australian Government’s foreign signals intelligence, offensive cyber, and cyber security agency. You will influence the strategic direction of ASD and work with colleagues across the Defence portfolio and Government to achieve results.
Successful applicants will exemplify ASD’s values and engender a culture of achievement, collaboration and agility. You will be self-aware, and will encourage and respect the diversity of ideas and perspectives that defines ASD’s workforce.
