As a key member of the Department of Pathology, Microbiology, and Immunology (DPMI) leadership team, the Associate Director of Public Service Laboratories and Translational Research will provide expertise in the operational, administrative, and scientific direction for Nebraska Public Health Laboratory (NPHL), Nebraska Public Services Laboratory (NPSL), Forensics Laboratory, BioBanks, Tissue Sciences Facility (TSF), and Lymphoma Study Group (LSG). This position will work with initiative and appropriate independent judgment and is responsible for managing day to day activities and associated managers and technical staff. Working directly with the departmental chair, faculty directors, administrative director, and key stakeholders, develops business operations processes and policies, oversees projects, manages space and renovations, coordinated all phase of small and capital projects, and resolves technical and facilities issues with campus partners.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE

IF ANY EXPERIENCE IS REQUIRED, PLEASE SPECIFY WHAT KIND OF EXPERIENCE:

Experience in a clinical or scientific industry of which a minimum of two years must include supervisory or management experience.
(Will consider additional related post high school education in lieu of required experience)

REQUIRED ADDITIONAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Needs minimal sustained direction in assessing needs, directing staff and carrying out departmental and professional responsibilities; self-starting and self-motivating.
  • Establishes, maintains, and promotes effective internal and external lines of communications; provides leadership (role model) for the staff.
  • Experience in budgeting and management of multiple funding sources, financial analysis, and modeling.
  • Ability to work at a fast pace and to prioritize multiple assignments/projects and respond to numerous requests.
  • Ability to resolve conflict amongst staff and to work collaboratively with department administrative director, internal and external physician clients, and other members of the healthcare team.
  • Ability to concentrate and focus on projects. Ability to plan, organize and coordinate work assignments for multiple individuals.
  • Possesses creative systems thinking to ensure operational efficiency; ability to problem solve and make decisions.
  • Self-control and stress tolerance in dealing with multiple requests and conflicting demands from multiple customers.
  • Outstanding social skills and demonstrated expertise in personal management. Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with employees, professional staff and students.
  • Complies with all applicable statutes, rules, and regulations, and University policies and procedures.
  • Willingly performs other related duties as assigned or requested.
  • Attention to detail and an above average ability to maintain accurate lab records and to handle data efficiently.
  • Willingness to accept training and become proficient in new technologies, computer software applications, and management tools.
  • Ability to recognize and protect confidential or sensitive information.

PREFERRED EDUCATION:

Master’s degree

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:

  • More than 5 years’ experience in a clinical or scientific industry, preferably in translational research and/or public service laboratory.
  • Three or more experience in laboratory management including supervision of technical staff.
  • Experience in academic setting.

PREFERRED ADDITIONAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Demonstrates outstanding leadership skills both within and outside the lab. Ability to listen, build consensus, establish priorities, address difficult issues, resolve conflicts, and maintain a high level of professional and personal integrity.
  • Self-motivated, positive individual comfortable with taking a leadership role.
  • Advanced scientific and technical knowledge in the services to be offered by the labs.
  • Familiarity with the companies providing relevant reagents and equipment for relevant techniques and experience requesting technical services from company representatives to facilitate optimal equipment and assay performance.
  • Knowledge of information management systems and web based sales and marketing strategies.
  • Familiarity with academic and private practice medicine.
