Reporting through the Deputy Fire Marshal (DFM), the Assistant Fire Marshal (AFM) is functionally and administratively responsible to the Fire Marshal. The incumbent is responsible for the effective implementation of fire safety and fire prevention, including responsibility for providing information, advice and guidance to owners, occupants, employers, employees, contractors, architects, engineers, and the general public (clients), as to the requirements of the Nunavut Fire Safety Act and Regulations (FSA).
The position directly and indirectly impacts on all Nunavummiut. The incumbent as a regional consultant, advisor and resource person for public and commercial buildings, fire and life safety requirements and decisions that will directly impact Government of Nunavut departments and agencies (GN), public and the private sector. The life safety issues that this position enforces, provides a safe environment and may increase a project’s cost thereby affecting budgeting.
The Assistant Fire Marshal is responsible for fire safety inspections within GN, public and private premises in order to reduce loss of life, property and accidental injury, by fire, through enforcement of the necessary acts, code and standards; conduct training programs and courses in firefighting (industrial, municipal, and public) in order to reduce the loss of life, property and accidental by injury; conduct fire education programs, providing instructions to community interest groups, general public; conduct investigations to determine the cause of fire, related fatalities or injuries, and property damage as the result of fire and ascertain whether the fire was result of negligence, carelessness, accident or design; liaise with Nunavut Government officials, Community Councils, RMCP, Regional Health, and Socials Services Board, and other community agencies and groups to plan and promote public awareness of fire prevention procedures in the workplace, at home and in all schools; and perform other related duties;

The knowledge, skills, and abilities required for this job are usually obtained through a Graduation from a recognized fire training college; three (3) years related experience in the fire service. IFSAC and/or Pro-Board certifications or equivalent.

  • NFPA 1031 – Level 2, Fire Inspector
  • NFPA 1041 – Level 1, Fire Service Instructor
  • Class 3 Driver’s License with Air Brake Certification

Assets:

  • NFPA 1041 – Level 2, Fire Service Instructor
  • NFPA 1035 – Level 1, Fire and Life Safety Educator
  • NFPA 1021 – Level 1, Fire Officer

Fluency in two or more of Nunavut’s official languages is an asset; and working towards, or successfully achieved, the following IFSAC and/or Pro-Board certification or equivalent.
This is a Highly Sensitive Position and a satisfactory Criminal Record Check, along with a clear Vulnerable Sector Check is required.
The Official Languages of Nunavut are Inuktut, English and French. Applicants may submit their resume in any of the official languages of Nunavut. Fluency in more than one of Nunavut’s official languages would be considered an asset. Knowledge of Inuit communities, culture, land,Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit, Inuktut and experience working in a northern cross-cultural environment are also considered assets.
