JOB SUMMARY:

The Textile and Fashion Design Program (TFD) in the Department of Design Studies at the University of Wisconsin, Madison seeks applicants for a faculty position in Fashion Design with a focus on Circular and Sustainable Design. The full time, 9-month assistant (tenure-track) or associate (tenured) professor will teach undergraduate and graduate students, conduct research and provide thought-leadership in programmatic guidance in Fashion Design, ranging from continuous improvement in curriculum to training students to produce the next generation of leaders in the field of sustainable and regenerative textile and fashion revolution.
The TFD Program is currently undergoing a program revision to focus on producing graduates who are responsible, resourceful, and research-driven about the place of textiles and fashion in global societies, cultural, economies, and environments. As such, we are seeking candidates who will be responsible for teaching classes and mentoring undergraduate and graduate students and conducting impactful research in fashion design and systems with an emphasis in resourcefulness, responsible design, and innovative research methods. This position will also provide thought-leadership for guiding the Fashion Design program and carries research, teaching, and service responsibilities appropriate for the rank sought: assistant or associate professor level. The 2-2 teaching load (4 courses per year) will include courses at introductory and advanced undergraduate level.
Additionally, the assistant or associate professor will deliver rigorous lecture, studio, and seminar instruction across a range of levels. A successful candidate will provide guidance and leadership in recruiting, teaching, and mentoring of students and advise students on academic and career choices.
The position is expected to provide experience and expertise in circular design and sustainability and preferably with one or more of following areas of interest within fashion design; technology integration, entrepreneurship, material innovation, craft, and fashion systems in local, regional and global contexts.
Other responsibilities include leading an independent and high-impact research
program; seeking external funding as appropriate for the area of study; advising and working with graduate students; and participating in department, school, and university service.

EDUCATION:

Required
Terminal Degree
Terminal degree (PhD or MFA) by the position start date and evidence of scholarship through practice-based work and/or publications in fashion design, textile design or art journals.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Years of experience and professional accomplishments will be commensurate with the rank sought. All candidates must have proven success in conducting research and teaching appropriate for their stage of career.
Associate professor candidates must possess experience and scholarly credentials that meet the tenure standards of the UW-Madison Divisional Committee and of the School of Human Ecology.

Minimum Required Qualifications:

  • The ability to lead a research program that attracts external funding individually and/or through active collaboration, that actively attracts and engages graduate students, and that produces high-impact scholarship.
  • The ability to teach Fashion Design studio, seminar, and lecture courses at both undergraduate and graduate levels with evidence of past teaching experience commensurate with the rank sought.
  • Demonstrated experience in fashion construction, research-based, sustainable design solutions at a level appropriate for grad/undergrad studio teaching.
  • The ability to work effectively within a diverse community, and a commitment to creating an inclusive work environment.
  • Awareness of industry practices in fashion and/or textiles.

Responsibilities:

The School of Human Ecology invites applications for a full time, 9-month faculty position at the rank of Assistant (tenure-track) or Associate (tenured) professor to join the faculty of the Design Studies Department. More specifically, this position will:

  • Deliver rigorous studio, lecture, seminar instruction primarily in the Textile and Fashion Design (TFD) program, and contribute to the new Design, Innovation and Society major.
  • Provide thought-leadership and contribute to undergraduate program development in Fashion Design
  • Devlop and lead an independent research program in fashion design research with an emphasis in resourcefulness, responsible design, and innovative research methods;
  • Seek external research funding as appropriate for the area of scholarship;
  • Publish or exhibit research findings in venues appropriate to areas of investigation;
  • Advise graduate students and mentor undergraduate students;
  • Integrate industry standard and emerging technology (Clo 3D, Pointcarre, Adobe Suite, etc) into curriculum;
  • Participate in department, school, university, and professional service appropriate to the faculty rank;
  • Demonstrate commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion;
  • Promote respect and the practice of civility in the workplace.
