The Department of Computer Science and Technology is seeking to recruit a new faculty member at the Assistant Professor/Associate Professor level who can contribute to research and teaching in the area of Wearable Computing.
The Department is one of the world leaders in wearable and mobile systems, with outstanding pioneering contributions (such as the active badges), as well as vibrant current research which encompasses both systems/device aspects and wearable data machine learning (see Mobile Systems Research Laboratory and Centre for Mobile, Wearable and Augmented Intelligence).
We are looking for a candidate with outstanding research credentials in the general area of wearable computing and sensing, machine learning for wearable signals and on-device computation. The ideal candidate will be an expert on the systems/device aspects of wearables as well as the related machine learning challenges and techniques. They will have a strong international track record of publication with focus on topics generally covered by ACM SIGMOBILE venues, as well as international visibility and evidence of community service and impact commensurate with their research area and experience. In addition, the ability, or potential, to secure research funding to support their research vision and build a world-class team of researchers is paramount.
We welcome applications from researchers with interdisciplinary interests who will collaborate with people across different subdisciplines in Computer Science and Technology and with other academic disciplines. Collaborations outside academia are also highly-valued, including with industry and third-sector organizations. All members of the Department are supported in the development of personal research leadership. The Department offers excellent administrative support within the diverse Cambridge ecosystem, with specialist local dedicated support in research management and funding, communications, finance, recruitment etc. The Department is also closely engaged with university-wide support for research commercialisation, collaboration and sponsorship, ethical governance of technology, and a wide range of interdisciplinary centres, training programmes, and initiatives.
The Cambridge degree programme in Computer Science broadly follows and extends the ACM curriculum, with many opportunities for local innovation, responding to the distinctive potential of the dynamic industry environment and diverse and talented student intake of Cambridge University. The person appointed will advance curriculum and contribute to undergraduate teaching in systems/device aspects and wearable data machine learning and will also have the opportunity to develop innovative graduate research content within the broad scope of the MPhil in Advanced Computer Science (ACS). The ACS integrates a wide range of cutting-edge technical content across all fields of computer science. Candidates will be excellent communicators and will be committed to the teaching of undergraduate and Master’s courses and they will also be expected to supervise research at Masters and PhD level.
Please see the Further Particulars for details of expectations of research, teaching and other aspects of the role.
Interviews will be held in person in Cambridge on 6 and 7 March 2025.
