DESCRIPTION:
The Department of Classics in the Faculty of Arts and Science at the University of Toronto invites applications for a one-year full-time contractually limited term appointment (CLTA) in the area of Greek and Latin Language and Pedagogy. The appointment will be at the rank of Assistant Professor with an anticipated start date of July 1, 2025, and ending on June 30, 2026.
Applicants must have earned a PhD degree in Classics or a related area by the time of appointment, or shortly thereafter, with a demonstrated record of excellence in research and teaching. We seek candidates whose research and teaching interests complement and strengthen our existing departmental strengths. The successful applicant will be expected to teach and coordinate teaching in the Department’s thriving undergraduate Greek and Latin programs; to provide leadership in pedagogical innovation and curricular renewal; and to train and mentor graduate student course instructors. The successful candidate will also be expected to pursue innovative and independent research, and to establish an outstanding, competitive, and externally funded research program.
The Department of Classics currently teaches over 400 undergraduate students in ancient Greek and Latin each year and is working to make the study of the ancient languages even more accessible and inclusive. The successful candidate will contribute to this effort through innovation in the design and delivery of introductory and intermediate language courses. They will also coordinate and train the graduate students who serve as course instructors in the language sequence and support outreach initiatives.
Candidates must provide evidence of research excellence which can be demonstrated by a record of publications in top-ranked and field relevant journals or forthcoming publications meeting high international standards, the submitted research statement, presentations at significant conferences, awards and accolades, and strong endorsements from referees.
Evidence of excellence in teaching will be demonstrated by teaching accomplishments, and the teaching dossier, including a teaching statement, sample course materials, and teaching evaluations or other evidence of superior performance in teaching-related activities submitted as part of the application, as well as strong letters of reference. Other teaching-related activities can include performance as a teaching assistant or course instructor, experience leading successful workshops or seminars, student mentorship, or excellent conference presentations or posters. Candidates must have the demonstrated capacity to adeptly teach introductory and/or intermediate courses in Ancient Greek and/or Latin, as well as courses in classical civilization (in translation) at the undergraduate level. The successful candidate will also have excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills as demonstrated in their application materials.
