ASSISTANT PROFESSOR IN COMPOSITION/THEORY (SCHOOL FOR THE ARTS)

Applications are invited for a tenure track position in Composition/Theory at the rank of Assistant Professor with the School for the Arts within the College of Arts & Science at the University of Saskatchewan with a projected start date of July 1, 2025.
The successful candidate will teach undergraduate and graduate level courses in composition, theory and related subject areas. The position may include graduate supervision and the development of new undergraduate and/or graduate level courses.
The successful candidate will actively participate in ongoing research scholarly and artistic work (RSAW), provide leadership in the composition and theory areas including, but not limited to recruitment, and undertake administrative activities and responsibilities corresponding to rank. In keeping with the University of Saskatchewan strategic planning commitments, the department welcomes all candidates including those who demonstrate leadership with respect to Indigenization and/or a strong commitment to ongoing musical artistic practice, innovative teaching, scholarship, and outreach and community engagement.
The University of Saskatchewan’s main campus is situated on Treaty 6 Territory and the Homeland of the Métis. The Department of Music/School for the Arts currently resides in the College of Arts & Science which offers a dynamic combination of programs in the humanities and fine arts, social sciences, and natural sciences. There are approximately 10,000 undergraduate and graduate students in the College and 300 faculty, including 9 Canada Research Chairs.
The department is playing a key role in the formation of the School for the Arts and will join that School on July 1, 2024. As part of the new School, the music area has a full-time faculty complement of nine (including the David L Kaplan Chair in Music), as well as twenty sessional instructors. Music programs include a B.Mus. (Performance, Individualized, and Music Education streams), graduate degrees in music education, musicology, music theory, and performance (includes conducting), a Jazz Certificate, a Music and Wellbeing Certificate, and, a B.A. (Major in Music). The Department of Music’s well established record of strong leadership in music education, performance, internationally recognized music scholarship, and ongoing outreach and engagement will continue as the School for the Arts develops
Qualifications: Candidates will be considered who hold either (1) a Doctorate (DMA or Ph.D.) in composition or theory or a related music field (ABD will be considered with expected completion prior to employment start date) or (2) a Master’s in Composition with a significant and ongoing record of professional success in music composition at the international level. Post-secondary teaching experience will be considered an asset.
The salary band for the 2023-2024 academic year is: Assistant Professor $99,945-$120,099.
