Description:

The Department of English at the University of Florida invites applications for a full-time, nine-month, tenure-track Assistant Professor position to teach in the B.A. and Ph.D. programs in the field of Latinx literary and cultural studies, beginning August 16, 2025. UF is a major, comprehensive, land-grant, research university. The normal teaching assignment is two courses per semester.
We welcome applications from all candidates with records of publication and teaching in the field. We are interested in candidates who can contribute to the diversity and excellence of our academic community. The successful candidate must be able to work with students, faculty, and staff from a range of social and cultural backgrounds.
Areas of Specialization
We especially welcome applications from candidates whose study of literatures, cultures, and rhetorics is intersectional and interdisciplinary, with areas of specialization that include—but are not limited to—Afro-Latinidad, Critical Latinx Indigeneities, Latinidad/Chicanidad and Digital Humanities, and Latinidad/Chicanidad and Environmental Humanities. Within these areas, we are particularly interested in work that attends to questions of race, gender and sexuality, feminism, class, labor theory, politics, migration, (de)coloniality, settler colonialism, border theory, and performance.
Interdisciplinary and Cross-disciplinary Opportunities
The Assistant Professor will have the option to affiliate with one or more of UF’s interdisciplinary units. These include the Center for Latin American Studies (established in 1930); the Department of Gender, Sexuality, and Women’s Studies; the African American Studies Program; and the Center for Arts, Migration, and Entrepreneurship. In addition, the Center for Humanities and the Public Sphere offers awards, funding opportunities, and other forms of professional development and enrichment.
Student Organizations
UF has a student body of almost 70,000 undergraduate and graduate students, including over 14,000 students (20%) who identify as Hispanic/Latinx. The person who fills this position will have opportunities to connect with student organizations such as the Hispanic Student Association, which is comprised of 20 affiliate organizations, including the Mexican-American Student Association (MASA), la Unión de Estudiantes Puertorriqueños Activos (UEPA), and the Cuban American Student Association (¡CASA!). In addition, the Institute of Hispanic-Latino Cultures (“La Casita,” established in 1994) and the Institute of Black Culture (established in 1971) provide space, resources, and programming for UF students and faculty.
Other Resources in Florida
In addition, the State University System of Florida hosts other resources for Latinx scholars. These include the Institute for the Study of Latin America and the Caribbean at the University of South Florida, the Puerto Rico Research Hub at the University of Central Florida, the Study of the Americas Initiative at Florida Atlantic University, and the Kimberly Green Latin American and Caribbean Center at Florida International University. Private institutions in the state also offer resources, including the Program in Cuban Studies at the University of Miami and the Center for José Martí Studies Affiliate at the University of Tampa.
