JOB SUMMARY:

The School of Criminology and Criminal Justice is a vibrant hub of intellectual engagement and critical reflection and is home to the Centre for Public Safety and Criminal Justice Research that boasts a secure Crime Lab that facilitates faculty and student involvement in a wide range of criminal justice research initiatives and opportunities. With approximately 500 program students, the School offers a Diploma in Criminal Justice, Bachelor of Arts degree in Criminal Justice, and an Honours program.
The School of Criminology and Criminal Justice is committed to the collaborative development of excellence in teaching, scholarship, and university and community service. Our faculty and staff are committed to providing instructional excellence in every class for every student, creating experiential learning and practical opportunities for students beyond the classroom, and contributing to the betterment of UFV, the communities we serve, our partners, and our discipline. The School of Criminology and Criminal Justice invites applications for one full-time, tenure-track faculty position.
We seek applicants who have knowledge and expertise in a wide range of criminology and criminal justice areas such that they can teach across our undergraduate curriculum. UFV is a teachingoriented university whereby faculty workload is 7 sections of teaching, approximately 3-5 course preparations, across the academic year. Successful candidates will also bring areas of expertise that expand upon the current expertise of faculty in the School. Some examples of areas that will complement existing expertise include Canadian policing, Canadian criminal law, Canadian corrections, and Indigenous Peoples and the Canadian criminal justice system. The School of Criminology and Criminal Justice encourages applications from candidates who are Indigenous or members of equity-seeking groups.
We are seeking collegial, energetic, and innovative individuals who have a recent record of successful post-secondary teaching, the ability to effectively mentor and supervise undergraduate students, and the potential to engage in applied research and scholarship that involves collaboration with community agencies and/or external organizations or agencies. Successful applicants will be expected to actively participate in departmental and university service, events, and initiatives. Ongoing professional development is required.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A PhD in Criminology or a closely related discipline by the employment start date.
  • A JD/LLB with substantial recent professional experience in Canadian criminal law will be considered.
  • Strong theoretical, conceptual, and applied knowledge of criminology, Canadian criminal justice, and/or Canadian law and legal institutions.
  • Recent evidence of at least one year of teaching excellence at the undergraduate level and the ability to teach across the undergraduate curriculum.
  • Teaching approaches must employ an inclusive and decolonized pedagogical approach and the ability to communicate effectively and respectfully with others, including Indigenous and racialized students.
  • The potential for an active research or scholarly portfolio, preferably in an applied area of Canadian criminal justice.
  • Experience in technology-supported teaching (e.g., hybrid, online) is preferred.
