Description:

New York University: NYU - NY: Arts and Science (A&S): Center for Social Media and Politics

DESCRIPTION

Social media and digital technology have transformed politics around the world, shifted the way we receive and engage with information, and presented urgent challenges to democratic governance. NYU’s Center for Social Media and Politics is an academic research institute dedicated to studying how social and online media impact politics, policy, and democracy.
We are seeking a part-time Assistant Research Scientist to support various research initiatives in our lab. The Assistant Research Scientist will provide support on recurring tasks for multiple projects across the Center’s research portfolio.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Partner with postdocs, engineers, and PIs to support data-driven social science research projects
  • Collect, clean, and label data
  • Conduct social science surveys and coordinate survey recruitment with postdocs

Strongest applicants would be able to demonstrate excellent time management skills, interest in data-driven social science, and experience with empirical research.
CSMaP consists of three core faculty directors from Political Science, Computer Science, and Computational Biology, as well as postdoctoral fellows, research engineers, PhD students in both Political Science and Data Science, affiliated faculty at NYU and other institutions, and undergraduates. The lab maintains a broad research agenda with many projects occurring simultaneously. Recent publications and/or working papers have centered on the impact of social media on ethnic polarization, the efficacy of crowdsourced fact-checking, the consumption of fake news, the distribution of media consumption by individuals, how (competitive) authoritarian regimes respond to online opposition, the cross-platform diffusion of election misinformation, and the prevalence of hate speech on Twitter.
The directors of the Center for Social Media and Politics actively encourage applicants from all backgrounds to apply. We believe in the importance of diversity as a key to the long-range health and vibrancy of the field, as well as its ability to create a more stimulating intellectual environment.
Required education: Bachelor’s degree in social science or quantitative fields (e.g. political science, sociology, psychology, economics, marketing, mathematics, statistics, or similar business or liberal arts programs)

Required skills and experience:

  • Experience with data labeling
  • Ability to work both as part of a team and independently
  • Ability to support multiple ongoing research projects and manage various tasks

Preferred knowledge and experience:

  • Interest in data-driven social science research
  • Experience in social science research
