The Cooperative Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Studies has an exciting opportunity for a full-time Assistant Scientist to work in Miami, FL.
The work is primarily focused on advancing model code development and conducting numerical modeling studies designed to improve our understanding of hurricanes and model forecasts of their track, structure, and intensity, especially at landfall, using NOAA’s HAFS model. The work will involve close collaboration with scientists at CIMAS and the NOAA Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratory (AOML).
JOB SUMMARY
The successful candidate will conduct research and develop new features with the current and future research versions of the HAFS/UFS model. This will be focused on mesoscale modeling of tropical cyclones, testing and improving physics parameterizations in the model. Additional work will involve interpreting mesoscale model simulations of tropical cyclones, as well as developing data analysis and visualization programs.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Education Requirements: Ph.D. in Atmospheric science, meteorology, mathematics, physics, computer programming, environmental science, physical oceanography, engineering, or other related fields.
- At least one year of relevant work experience
- Background in scientific programming, Fortran, and python are desirable.Writing skills as demonstrated in peer reviewed publications may be required.
