Salary range: The hourly salary range for this position is $29.36 - $32.72
POSITION DESCRIPTION
The Department of Microbiology and Molecular Genetics at the UC Davis College of Biological Sciences is seeking a part-time Assistant Specialist. The purpose of this position is to provide research assistance in mathematical molecular biology to Dr. Mariel Vazquez. This recruitment is conducted at the assistant rank. The purpose of this position is to contribute to the areas of ongoing research in topological molecular biology in the Arsuaga-Vazquez lab, under the supervision of Professor Mariel Vazquez. The resulting hire will be at the assistant rank, regardless of the proposed appointee’s qualifications.
This Specialist position has a narrow focus in a specialized area and provides technical or specialized expertise with mathematical and computational biology research methods in the planning and execution of research projects investigating the structure of nucleic acids. This position requires excellent programming skills and previous experience working in projects in mathematical. molecular biology. The Specialist must be able to work effectively independently as well as a team member. The Specialist stays apprised of emerging issues and problems and maintains technical competence in the designated area(s) of specialization. Within this defined area and when appropriate, the Specialist is expected to provide leadership, facilitate teamwork and develop collaborative relationships with colleagues and to supply input into the planning of research and educational programs. Normally, Specialists do not have Principal Investigator (PI) status but may obtain permission by exception and/or collaborate with a PI in preparing research proposals for extramural funding. The Specialist is evaluated for merit and promotion using three basic criteria outlined below.
QUALIFICATIONS
Basic qualifications (required at time of application)
- Baccalaureate degree in mathematics, applied mathematics or computer science plus three or more years of research experience
- Excellent programming skills in python and C/C++
- Experience working with methods from computational linguistics applied to molecular biology, specifically to the study of nucleic acid structure. Experience with using visualization tools and data analytic tools. Working knowledge of laTex
- Interest in computational/mathematical biology
- Availability to attend group meetings twice a week
Preferred qualifications (other preferred, but not required, qualifications for the position)
- Experience with Molecular Dynamics software and methodologies
- Skills implementing and analyzing Monte-Carlo methods, familiarity with Metropolis sampling and multiple Markov chains.
- Knowledge of basic bioinformatics tools to study genomic sequences
- Basic knowledge of knot theory.
- Communication skills: Professional and prompt with work related communications across all media including e-mail, phone, texting, Zoom. Proficient in English. Evidence of scientific writing skills, through co-authors publications.
- Interpersonal skills: Works well with people across all demographics by being respectful of others’ experiences and trusting in their professionalism and expertise to accomplish work goals. Believes respect is key and that everyone brings a unique and valuable perspective to the table when solving any problem.
- Management skills: Able to work with shifting priorities and stacking goals while maintaining organization and appropriate deadline management. Able to manage laboratory administrative tasks in a timely manner.
