Metra is one of the largest and most complex commuter rail systems in North America, serving Cook, DuPage, Will, Lake, Kane, and McHenry Counties. The agency is linking communities in Northeastern Illinois by providing safe, reliable, and efficient commuter service.
The Supply Chain Operations Division consists of Materials Contract Administration and Storehouse Operations. The purpose of the department is to serve various customers within Metra. Managing the continuous supply of parts materials and services required to support Engineering, Mechanical and Transit Operations. Additionally, the department operates Metra’s four storehouses and is responsible for managing Metra’s fuel and P-Card programs.
Reporting directly to the Storekeeper, the Assistant Storekeeper will perform all the duties and oversee the operations of the storehouse in the Storekeeper’s absence including: ensuring the integrity, security, and accuracy of the inventory; conducting safety meetings; supervising contract employees and handling all personnel concerns; and analyzing inventory, monitoring stock levels, and ordering non-inventory materials and services.
On a regular basis, the Assistant Storekeeper will perform the major duties of the storehouse clerk, operate forklift trucks and other storehouse equipment to load, unload, pick-up, and deliver material.
Receive, catalog, and reconcile inventory and invoicing discrepancies with Procurement and Accounts Payable.
Input data into the computer and assist with employee training. Select and issue material in response to requests, transfers, restocking and back orders.
Perform cycle counting, add new line items to storage areas, and monitor integrity of the inventory.
This is a Union position. Starting pay rates may vary based on entry rates in the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA)

Job Requirements
1. High School graduate or equivalent.
2. Must possess two (2) years of warehouse experience.
3. Basic knowledge of coach, locomotive, and engineering material, equipment, and parts.
4. Able to type 25 wpm.
- Possess:
- good verbal and written communication skills.
- and maintain a valid class “C” driver’s license.
- a forklift certification OR be able to be certified within the 30 days of hire.
- Able to lift 50 pounds.
Preferences:
Experience:
- supervising contract personnel in a Railroad or other transportation based storehouse or warehouse environment.
- with RMIS and Global PO systems.
