JOB DESCRIPTION

Assistant Supervisors is responsible for Cando’s day to day and shift by shift operations at Vaughan Intermodal Terminal while ensuring customer commitments are met safely and on time.

  • Proficient in the use of computer equipment, operating systems, word processing, spreadsheets and database software
  • Ability to obtain and maintain all necessary certification and meet all safety and customer requirements including clear drug and alcohol testing; hold and maintain a valid provincial driver’s license

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

  • Minimum five (5) years’ working in heavy industrial environment; rail experience is an asset
  • Minimum two (2) years in a leadership or supervisory position
  • Experience as a locomotive operator or groundsperson an asset
  • Experience working with Safety Management Systems

Responsibilities:

Safety

  • Actively participates in the execution of Cando’s Safety Management Plan and Initiatives including audits and reports; observes, documents, and evaluates safe work practices as per rules and regulations
  • Assists in facilitation of employee meetings to emphasize safety and discuss safety risks; participates on customer safety and quality teams as required
  • Actively participates in the Investigation of accidents and incidents Investigates accidents and incidents

Service Delivery

  • Supports daily and weekly operating plans and customer interaction for the team ensuring customer needs are being met
  • Ensures safe operation of the locomotive and train movements including conducting clear and concise job briefings
  • Complies with all applicable operating rules, switching procedures and regulations imposed by government, the customer, and/or Cando; practicing and promoting safe work habits
  • Performs regular audits and confirms that all preventative and scheduled maintenance and inspections are completed as required to ensure the facility and equipment remains in prime operating conditions at all times
  • Keeps the interior of the locomotive safe, clean, and tidy
  • Completes daily inspection and testing of the locomotive brakes and safety devices
  • Reports all safety, equipment, and track problems
  • Completes daily reports, daily logs, and other reports deemed necessary
  • Participates with the team in providing excellent customer service while promoting a superior company image
  • Participates in training or company initiatives as required

Management and Administration

  • Assists in developing and monitoring, service plans, personnel development plans, timekeeping and resource requirements
  • Actively participates in the development and maintenance of the customer relationship
  • Assists in establishing and maintaining the operating team including participation in hiring, coaching, leading activities, monitoring payroll and WSIB functions
  • Maintains standard operating procedures, operating the site safely and meeting all regulatory requirements

  • Influences and inspires others to achieve company objectives
  • Builds and maintains positive relationships with peers, customers and other third parties
  • Leads others in adapting to innovative work environments and ensures company initiatives, decisions, and policies are communicated

  • Provides direct supervision, conducts proactive proficiency observations, and daily records of operations
  • Trains team members and provides operational assistance and expertise when required
