KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of all hazards in the workplace and all applicable safety precautions, safety standards, codes, procedures, policies, guidelines as it relates to the work.
  • Knowledge of applicable codes, regulations and bylaws pertaining to the work.
  • Knowledge of standard administrative practices including the policies and procedures relating to the work.
  • Knowledge of the methods, practices, tools and equipment used in water quality monitoring.
  • Knowledge of installing, cleaning, maintaining, repairing, fitting, and servicing water meters and meter boxes.
  • Knowledge of SCADA supervised water quality monitoring equipment.
  • Knowledge of hydraulic water pump operation, water meter testing and water measurement principles.
  • Skill in the use and care of precision hand and power tools and other equipment used in the work.
  • Ability to carry out oral and written instruction and to exercise independent judgement and action in processing assignments.
  • Ability to perform a variety of work related semi-skilled and skilled tasks.
  • Ability to read blueprints and sketches.
  • Ability to prepare and maintain routine records related to the work.
  • Ability to adhere to established methods that are well defined and detailed.
  • Ability to apply knowledge to determine order of tasks and correct method to accomplish tasks.
  • Ability to ensure that own work meets quality and service requirements.
  • Ability to work with others and be able to use common courtesy, tact and diplomacy in maintaining working relationships.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, superiors and the public.
  • Ability to train and mentor new staff.
  • Ability to successfully clear a Police Information Check.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:

Completion of Grade 12 supplemented by one year of technical related course work and a minimum of two years experience in water meter repair or related technical experience, preferably in a municipal environment OR equivalent combination of training and education.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist in the repair, maintenance and certification of cross-connection control devices.
  • Assist with monitoring, maintenance and calibration of SCADA supervised water quality monitoring equipment.
  • Assist with the collection and storage of accurate records of water samples from various locations throughout the distribution network.
  • Assist with maintenance and monitoring of cathodic protection systems throughout the distribution network.
  • Read commercial and residential water meters and perform other duties in the Water department as required.
