Position Summary:
Reporting to the Director, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion, the Associate Director is the lead on McGill’s efforts to address and combat anti-Black racism, notably through measures set out in
McGill’s Action Plan to Address Anti-Black Racism
(AP-ABR) The incumbent proactively collaborates with the Associate Provost, (Academic Policies and Faculty Affairs), and Directors across McGill to ensure that the AP-ABR is implemented in a manner that abides by its commitments in terms of content, timeline, and stakeholder consultation and representation.
Although the AP-ABR is instituted for the period 2020-2025, the incumbent works to embed measures connected with this Action Plan so that anti-racism efforts become part of the fabric of McGill’s policies and processes. As such, the work connected with this position will endure well past the lifetime of the AP-ABR.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Principal lead with all academic and administrative leaders across McGill (including Faculty deans and chairs of departments) on all initiatives tied to the AP-ABR. In particular, advises and collaborates with all leaders to develop Faculty/unit-specific plans, strategies and protocols that challenge anti-Black racism.
- Leads the establishment of interchange agreements and partnerships with higher education institutions that have strong Black and African-descendant populations such as the Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and institutions within the Caribbean.
- Institutes a program with Black faculty to support their flourishing and growth at McGill as scholars, researchers, leaders, and teachers.
- Leads the ABR Working Group, composed of staff across McGill working on anti-racism initiatives.
- Provides guidance and expertise across the University on work that advances the AP-ABR by providing advice and expertise to units as they seek to boost representation of diverse groups and maintain a climate for working, learning and/or delivery services
- Oversees the ongoing review of McGill University’s efforts and success with respect to realizing on the commitments set out in the AP-ABR through analysis of qualitative and quantitative information, with an eye to correcting and improving practices where targeted outcomes are not fully realized
- Oversees the financial management related to AP-ABR. This involves planning the budget for several projects, monitoring expenses and ensuring financial management in compliance with university polices and processes.
- Develops and implement communications plans for different projects and initiatives related to the AP=ABR (in collaboration with Communications and External Relations Office).
- Ensures appropriate stakeholder engagement/consultation both within McGill and with Black communities in Montréal and Québec.
- Acts as the McGill lead and representative for the Universities Studying Slavery (USS) consortium
- Liaises and consults with government offices responsible for institutional anti-racism initiatives at the federal, provincial, and municipal levels.
- Creates and directs content on McGill websites related to the McGill’s Action Plan to Address Anti-Black Racism; recommend and establish mechanisms and processes to inform internal and external stakeholders regularly on relevant activities to build awareness and engage participation
- Oversees initiatives that keep the community informed and ensure robust accountability for action taken to enhance the representation and success of Black students, faculty and staff, in line with the AP-ABR.
- Maintains a close working relationship with the members of the Black community at McGill, faculties, administrative units and associated governance committees;
- Researches, analyzes and keeps up-to-date on emerging trends and issues in connection with enhancing Black presence and success in higher education, especially in Canada; provide advice and help build dialogue and consensus on the implementation of initiatives tied to this goal.
- Plans and organizes institutional special events and conferences connected with the AP-ABR; maintains a registry of all associated activities, participants, and timelines.
- Liaises with external organizations and stakeholders such as other postsecondary institutions and community organizations.
- Supervises the Black Student Affairs Liaison.
- Oversees the hiring and supervision of student research assistants working on the AP-ABR.
- Organizes the review of and responds to daily incoming inquiries and, in a timely manner, bring forward any pertinent items to the attention of the Associate Provost; make recommendations on appropriate actions and responses.
- Performs other mandates related to activities in the Office of the Provost-Equity Team as required, insofar as these are tied to efforts to address anti-Black racism.
Other Qualifying Skills and/or Abilities
- Bachelor’s Degree in a field relevant to the primary responsibilities and two to four years of related experience.
- Experience in project and event planning, organization and delivery. Proven ability to oversee the roll out and coordination of big projects involving multiple stakeholders and perspectives.
- Knowledge of the University environment and of the Quebec higher education system desirable.
- Significant experience working with the Black communities and organizations, especially in Montreal.
- Experience in providing advice and support to senior management.
- Good knowledge (Level 4) of spoken and written English and French in order to deal with complex situations in both official languages.
- Good knowledge of (Intermediate Level) of Microsoft Excel and Word.
- Excellent interpersonal, facilitation, organizational, communication, and team-building skills.
- Capacity to engage members of diverse communities and skilled in a variety of consultation techniques, protocols, and strategies.
- Aptitude to work in a service-oriented environment as both a member of a team and independently.
- Superior ability to maintain a high degree of professionalism and discretion.
- Diligent attention to detail.
Knowledge of French and English: McGill University is an English-language university where day to day duties may require English communication both verbally and in writing. The level of English required for this position has been assessed at a level #4 on a scale of 0-4.”
