About the role
As ATB’s next Associate Director, Energy, you are someone who loves solving problems, connecting with people and who is customer obsessed and leverages their financial skills to find ways to create a meaningful impact for our clients. This role is responsible for supporting the overall quality, and credit risk of ATBs energy lending portfolio. The Associate Director will act as a key part of the Deal Team to respond, take leadership, and collaborate across multiple teams to meet client needs and ensure flawless execution. Reporting to the Managing Director, Credit Portfolio, they work closely with the Director, Credit Structuring and Execution and other partners in the Capital Markets / Corporate Banking team.
Associate Director Accountabilities:

Portfolio Management:

  • Assisting with the management of a portfolio focusing on the senior debt relationship with the client. Working closely with the Director, Credit Structuring & Execution, to promote loan growth through outstanding credit awareness and management, identify opportunities to further the profitability of the portfolio and use problem solving, initiative and effective coordination of other teammates and actions to execute on financial solutions.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple accounts at the same time.
  • Participate in term sheet development and deal structures through credit analysis and experience to assist the Director, Credit Structuring & Execution in solving the client’s current and future needs.
  • Prepare credit assessments through completion of applications for credit which include:
  • Analyze financial statements and information to assess risk and determine which ATB financial services meet the client’s needs;
  • Understand credit ratings and return assessments together with recommendations regarding any impacts to costs and availability of capital;
  • Financial modeling and sensitivity analysis of projections;
  • Capital structure analysis with recommendations on alternate capital structures;
  • Industry and bench-marking assessments, including key drivers and trends;
  • Valuation analysis, security analysis with relevant recommendations.
  • Identify and either respond to or refer opportunities generated from client analysis and inquiries to Directors in the Financial Services Group or other contact within or outside of ATB (Retail, Wealth, Financial Markets, etc).
  • Ensure credit decisions/recommendations are in accordance with sound credit granting principles and are in accordance with ATB lending policy and procedures. Enhancing and maintaining a strong relationship with ATB Risk and Credit groups.
  • Develop a strong knowledge of ATB products and services available to our customers.
  • Develop an intimate knowledge of internal partner groups and processes required to align the institution to serve the needs of the client.
  • Participate in Sales Team meetings, sharing successes, best practices, and other information with the team.

Accountabilities
Associate Director Accountabilities continued:

Financial:

  • Contribute to overall financial targets and the Energy Strategy through the deployment of the multi-coverage model in ATB Capital Markets.
  • Ensure new opportunities identified while performing Client reviews are addressed and/or are appropriately escalated to the Director, Credit Structuring and Execution.
  • Minimize the risk related to loan loss provisions by managing the portfolio at an acceptable level.

Client:

  • Preparation and completion of Credit Applications and Loan Advisories for prospects
  • Assist the Director, Credit Structuring and Execution with Deal Structuring / Term Sheets and completion of Client transactions (onboarding / fulfillment)
  • Assisting the Director, Credit Structuring and Execution with monitoring and control requirements of the Client.
  • Provide support and coverage to the Director, Credit Structuring and Execution (under the direction of the Managing Director, Credit Portfolio).
  • Assisting with Client presentations / research when required (at the direction of Managing Director, Credit Portfolio).
  • Be a key member of the deal team motivating team members to ensure flawless execution for our clients

People:

  • Coaching and mentorship of fellow teammates (Operational partners)
  • Develop and maintain external relationships related to Client transactions (Solicitors / Agents / Etc.)

Compliance & Risk:

  • Portfolio Health: effectively managing within the Capital Markets portfolio the following but not limited to:
  • Assistance with Capital Markets Corporate Banking renewals/expiries
  • Ultimate responsibility for accuracy and completion of Margining and Covenants
  • Timely reporting and action of any Breaches/EWS (triggers) of covenants.
  • Monitoring Overdrafts/Wire Transfers (“PCOM”)
  • Overseeing reporting / following up on late items.
  • Ensuring Security / Collateral and Loan Documentation are complete and in good standing
  • Execution of Fundings (initial and subsequent funding) / signing off on Conditions Precedent to Funding.
  • Completion of Corporate Health Assessment (high risk account review) in collaboration with Director, Credit Structuring and Execution
  • Responsible for all documentation required on the portfolio related to regulation, compliance and governance including FINTRAC completed by supporting teams.
  • Demonstrate ownership and oversight with sound credit practices to mitigate and control risks related to the portfolio.
  • Ensure that ATBs risk appetite, conditions of credit and documentation are maintained. Provide oversight of the portfolio to ensure an effective balance between profitability and risk management is maintained.
  • Actively manage and resolve arrears and debt recovery
  • Assistance with internal and external audit reporting requirements when required.

Skills, experience & requirements

Requirements

  • 3-5+ years of Financial Institution experience including progressively complex roles with a specific focus on corporate finance.
  • Undergraduate degree in business commerce, economics, or a related field.
  • Chartered Financial Analyst, CPA accreditation or Graduate level education is an asset.
  • Knowledge of and strong interest in the energy industry
  • Demonstrated leadership in a financial capacity with strong working knowledge of corporate finance credit products and services.
  • Strong communication skills with demonstrated ability to build relationships with external clients and internal teammates.
  • Exceptional analytical capability and financial acumen with proven ability to develop financial analysis in Excel of mid to large organizations and complex business issues.
  • Demonstrated collaborative skills in working with senior management and specialists with proven ability to influence and coordinate a team, build strong internal relationships, and collaborate to achieve results.
  • Excellent priority management with capability to manage multiple transactions, initiatives and daily activity to best meet the needs of the client.
  • Advanced problem solving skills and ability to take initiative to find and execute innovative solutions.
  • Ability to present complex issues effectively at all levels in the organization and effectively influence others.
  • Proven ability to build impactful relationships across all levels of the organization.
  • Demonstrated pursuit of excellence inside or outside of work experience, with ability to adapt to diverse situations.
