Description:

This position is considered Hybrid with an expectation to be in the Rosemont, IL office 1-3 times a month for All Staff Meetings, trainings, and department meetings. The compensation for this role will be based on experience within the given range on the job posting.

SUMMARY

Assists the Senior Director, State Government Affairs with providing support to state associations for their government relations programs. Analyzes, monitors, and researches state legislative and regulatory developments. Provides information to members and non-members. Attends meetings for external organizations. Provides strategic guidance and support to state associations on their advocacy agendas.

EXPERIENCE:

  • Previous experience with legislative and regulatory analysis and state government affairs is essential.
  • Previous state or federal government affairs experience is highly desirable.
  • Public speaking experience is desirable, but not required.

SKILLS:

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • High levels of organizational skill
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive information.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).

EDUCATION/CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSES

  • Minimum of bachelors degree in Political Science or an appropriate associated discipline.
  • J.D. strongly preferred, but not required.

Responsibilities:

  • Organizes, coordinates, and completes Division projects assigned by Division Senior Director, including analyzing and summarizing statutory and regulatory information, preparing summaries and other background materials, and conducting necessary research.
  • Screening and analysis of proposed legislation and regulations from all 50 states. Includes review, interpretation, analysis of tendencies and trends, and assessment of present and proposed matters of interest to members as they affect nurse anesthesia practice.
  • Provide consultation, analysis and strategic advice to state nurse anesthetist association leaders, attorneys and lobbyists regarding legislative and regulatory issues and litigation. This includes assistance with written and oral testimony, the development of fact sheets and position papers, project strategy, and facilitating grassroots lobbying efforts.
  • Provide strategic support to state associations, supporting them in assessing political climate for legislation along with local lobby team. Work directly with the state association and local lobby team and attorney on efforts to pass legislation or defeat opposition legislation.
  • Assist state association in preparing for testimony before state legislative commitees and regulatory agencies. Serve as a liaison between state association and AANA divisions to provide state associations with needed resources and support.
  • Prepares analysis and comments to state presidents, government relations committee chairs, AANA committees and staff, AANA Board of Directors, attorneys and lobbyists regarding issues of interest (e.g., preparing comments for submission to a state administrative agency regarding a proposed regulation; preparing an analysis of the pros and cons of proposed legislation).
  • Draft articles, news items and other updates for AANA publications, website and other AANA communication vehicles as necessary.
  • Review pertinent publications and Web sites regularly, and identify relevant legislative and regulatory trends that affect the nurse anesthesia profession.
  • Contact other groups and organizations as necessary to obtain information and summaries in areas of interest to members.
  • Attends state association meetings when asked to provide information and consultation regarding state legislative and regulatory initiatives.
  • At the discretion of the Divisions Senior Director, attends state legislative or regulatory hearings.
  • Handles inquiries from members, legal counsel, non-CRNA healthcare providers, and healthcare administrators in a variety of substantive areas. These include questions concerning state legislative and regulatory requirements.
  • Coordinates participation in, and attends, external meetings as determined by the Divisions Senior Director.
