We are seeking an Associate General Counsel to join our legal team in our Toronto office. As Associate General Counsel, the new attorney will report to Mott MacDonald’s (MM) North American General Counsel. This position will support client groups across Canada working directly with our executive leadership team on legal matters.

WE INVITE APPLICATIONS FROM CANDIDATES WITH THE FOLLOWING EXPERIENCE:

  • A Juris Doctorate or equivalent from an accredited law school and membership in at least one Provincial Bar is required
  • Six (6) to twelve (12) years’ experience in matters directly relating to the engineering/architecture/construction industries
  • Demonstrated drafting and negotiation experience involving professional services and construction related agreements, including but not limited design-build and other alternative delivery agreements
  • Able to identify, assess and manage risk inherent to projects in the engineering/architecture consulting industry.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to communicate effectively, concisely and confidently with all levels of management.
  • Outgoing, personable and a team player
  • Self-driven & resourceful to achieve goals independently and in groups
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines with various stakeholders
  • Demonstrated legal experience with a major engineering company, contractor, consultant or law firm in the areas of engineering and construction law
  • Capable of presenting before senior management
  • Ability to work independently, with minimal oversight

Responsibilities:

  • Guidance on risk management and adherence to company policies
  • Review, draft, and negotiate contracts, subcontracts and other legal documents relating to architecture, engineering, construction, energy, and other services provided by MM to clients in the public and private sectors, including documents related to teaming arrangements, design-build agreements, joint ventures, confidentiality agreements, licenses, insurance, and other matters
  • Act in an advisory capacity making recommendations that may have an important bearing on the conduct of the organization’s business
  • Work with management and staff to resolve pre-litigation disputes and potential claims
  • Supervise and manage litigation, including professional liability, breach of contract, and personal injury/wrongful death matters, utilizing outside counsel retained by the company to maximize quality and cost-effectiveness
  • Manage outside counsel while controlling legal expenses and budgets
  • Participate in due diligence and negotiation of purchase and sale of MM acquisition targets
  • Provide guidance and advice regarding personnel and human resources matters
  • Prepare and review legal memoranda and briefs relating to organizational risks and activities
  • Provide staff with guidance on compliance with federal and provincial laws, statutes and regulations
