Description:
Birkbeck, University of London, has an excellent opportunity to work as an Associate Lecturer, supporting the teaching team on the BPS accredited BSc Psychology programme.
Your role will involve delivering teaching to Birkbeck students. Specifically, you will be responsible for the teaching, administration, and assessment marking of the Introduction to Neuroscience module, a Level 4 module that is a compulsory component of our BPS-accredited BSc Psychology programme.
This module introduces key concepts and research techniques in neuroscience relevant to psychology. It covers topics such as the basics of neural function, neuroanatomy, neurophysiology, sensorimotor processing, and current research methods in neuroscience.
The general aims of the course are to:
- Introduce the methods used in contemporary neuroscience.
- Explain the principles of neuronal and synaptic conduction in relation to information processing.
- Outline the overall organization of the brain and nervous system.
- Discuss the role of brain neurotransmitters and hormones in behavior.
- Examine the distribution of major behavioral functions (e.g., sensory processing, motor control) within brain structures and pathways.
- Explore the interplay of cognitive and physiological factors in major behavioral functions (e.g., emotion).
As an Associate Lecturer, you will work closely with the main module convener, Prof Elisa Raffaella Ferre, to organise, deliver, and assess the module. Comprehensive materials for all lectures will be provided.
The module requires 10 teaching sessions which are 3 hours each. These will be delivered on Thursday either in the afternoons from 2pm to 5 pm or evenings from 6 pm to 9 pm during the Autumn term (October to December) according to a pre-defined teaching schedule (teaching is shared between the main module convenor and the Associate Lecturer). Indicative module syllabi are available on our website.
In addition to the criteria specified in the job pack below, candidates must possess:
- A first degree in Psychology or an equivalent relevant qualification.
- Advanced knowledge and experience in neuroscience, including models and methods.
- An understanding of the diverse needs of students, including full-time UCAS students and part-time adult learners, with the ability to engage and inspire them.
- Confident presentation skills with the ability to clearly and effectively communicate specialist subject knowledge.
- Strong oral and written communication skills, capable of conveying both simple and complex academic concepts.
- Proficiency in IT and communication technologies, particularly in using standard software packages (e.g., Word, Excel, email, internet).
