Are you passionate about the general principles of research design? Are you interested in planning your own research project? Are you attracted to working for a leading London University?
The School of Social Sciences at Birkbeck, University of London, is seeking to recruit an Associate Lecturer to deliver the module: Qualitative Research Design.

As an Associate Lecturer you will teach:

  • Qualitative Research Design, 15 teaching hours, Friday evening 6-7.30pm. From 17 January to 28 March 2025.

You will have knowledge of the principles of qualitative research design and experience of this in practice and be qualified to the corresponding level of the award as required to teach (or demonstrate equivalent professional/industry level experience).
You will prepare and deliver weekly lecturers (pre-recorded and uploaded onto Birkbeck’s online learning platform, Moodle) and weekly seminars (face-to-face, on campus) on a Friday evening.
In seminars, you will be required to lead discussion on the module content each week, to facilitate any seminar tasks (designed by them) and to answer any questions from students related to each week’s content. You will also mark students’ assignments.

Further to the person specification, essential requirements for this role are:

  • Experience of undertaking research using at least one qualitative method (e.g. interviewing, focus groups, ethnography, discourse analysis etc.), either in an academic or non-academic setting;
  • Experience of qualitative research design and the ability to teach the principles of this to postgraduate students (e.g. what makes a good research question, how to plan and conduct a literature review, how to select a suitable methodology, how to approach sampling, how to analyse qualitative data, what makes a successful research output etc.);
  • Effective oral and written communication skills, to convey both simple and more complex information and academic concepts;
  • Ability to engage the interest and enthusiasm of students and inspire them to learn;
  • Awareness of the needs of part time learners and adult learners.
