We are seeking committed and driven Permanent Full Time Associate Physicians to support the provision of continuous care in a team-based environment working collaboratively with the MRP, Residents, nursing and allied care providers to care for Acute Care Surgery (ACS) patients including those admitted under any other requesting service.
Under the supervision of the Most Responsible Provider (MRP), the Associate Physician (AP), Acute Care Surgery would perform duties within the scope of AP clinical duties and responsibilities, and would serve as a physician extender to provide care to inpatients at Surrey Memorial Hospital under the ACS Service/Program.

Responsibilities:
Within the context of a client and family centered model of care and in accordance with the Mission, Vision, Values and the strategic directions of Fraser Health Authority, the Associate Physician (AP), under the supervision of the Most Responsible Provider (MRP), will provide care patients at SMH under the Acute Care Surgery (ACS) services. The AP will support the provision of continuous care in a team-based environment working collaboratively with the MRP, Residents, Fellows, nursing, medical students, and allied healthcare providers to care for ACS patients including those admitted under any other requesting service. The AP will perform duties within the scope of an Associate Physician clinical duties, responsibilities, and serves as a physician extender to provide care to inpatients at SMH under the ACS Service/Program. The AP works under the supervision of the Most Responsible Provider (MRP) who is the ACS Attending on a day-to-day basis and is accountable to the respective AP program lead(s) for the overall provision of quality of care and professional development.
Responsibilities:
- Participates in patient rounds under the supervision of the attending physician along with residents and other care team members.
- Assess the day-to-day care of patients, including writing medical orders, consultation with other services, and responding to changing patient conditions in consultation with attending physician.
- Develops treatment plans in response to changing patient conditions and accordingly follows through on investigations in consultation with attending physician.
- Performs medical surgical consultations for in-patients and patients referred to the emergency room (ER) in consultation with attending physician.
- Performs and documents admission history and physical examinations, progress notes, discharge summaries, and medication reconciliations as per the CPSBC and organizational standards, policies and guidelines.
- Communicates with and responds in a timely manner to calls from the nursing staff and other care team members.
- Communicates with patients, family members, and other consulting services concerning care plans as appropriate.
- Performs the procedures within the scope of their demonstrated competence. The AP will not proceed until full training/competence is established and the appropriate sign-off by the Supervising Physician, Division/Department head or delegate is completed. Procedures may include the following: removing drains (not within the scope of nursing), placing and removing NG tubes, wound debridement, and drainage of superficial abscesses.
- Participates in professional development activities (a minimum of 50 hours per year, 25 hours of which must be accredited training recognized by the Royal College of Physician and Surgeons’ Maintenance of Certification Program for healthcare professionals).
- Complies with the continuing professional development reporting requirements.
- Attends clinical rounds, morbidity and mortality rounds, and other educational and research sessions.
- Participates in Quality Improvement projects relating to their patient or programs.
- May provide basic teaching and basic supervision for trainees when appropriate.
Qualifications:
Medical degree from a school listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools.
Minimum of two (2) years of accredited postgraduate training as a medical or surgical specialist, verified by the CPSBC. Successful completion of Part 1 of the Medical Council of Canada Qualifying Examination (MCCQE) or Steps 1 through 3 of the United States Medical Licensing Examinations (USMLEs). Must meet the CPSBC’s English language proficiency requirements.
Eligible for registration with the CPSBC in the Associate Physician class, under sponsorship by Fraser Health Authority.
Valid Canadian Citizenship, be a permanent resident or be legally able to live and work in British Columbia.
Proficiency in the English Language as established by the CPSBC and eligibility for registration with the CSPSBC in the Associate Physician Class, under sponsorship by Fraser Health.
Qualified candidates will hold or achieve BC College of Physician & Surgeons certification during the three-month training and orientation period.
