THE QUALIFICATIONS AND COMPETENCIES

  • Completed a master’s or undergraduate degree with a focus in public policy, public administration
  • 2-3 years of work experience in public policy and/or research
  • Proven experience working independently with strong time and project management skills
  • Excellent verbal, writing and editing skills in English (French is an asset)
  • Interest in learning and continuous improvement

Responsibilities:

THE ROLE

McMillan Vantage is hiring an Associate beginning December 2, 2024, or on a mutually agreed upon date. Our ideal candidate is someone who has completed their master’s in public policy, public administration, political management, and/or completed 2-3 years in a policy role for a Canadian business, industry association, government, or not-for-profit.
The successful individual is looking to build a career in public policy, research, and public affairs consulting. You consider yourself a policy generalist with interest in a wide variety of sectors critical to the Canadian economy.
Team Vantage operates in a hybrid model. This individual would be encouraged to spend the equivalent of three days a week in office.

THE RESPONSIBILITIES

McMillan Vantage consultants are talented, highly-organized team players with the ability to work effectively on several projects at one time. Some of the responsibilities for an Associate include:

  • Conducting in-depth research, participating in consultations, and writing policy white papers, reports, and backgrounders for various clients
  • Developing jurisdictional policy scans through the review of legislation, regulations, and statements made by policymakers online and in the media
  • Monitoring and synthesizing the impact of legislative developments, regulatory changes, and emerging trends at the municipal, provincial, and federal level
  • Analyzing proposed legislation and regulations to assess their impact on industry, workers, communities, or sectors and help prepare summaries or responses
  • Compiling and analyzing quantitative and qualitative data to support policy recommendations and monitoring of trends that could influence policy decisions
  • Collaboration with colleagues to develop policy consultation materials with internal and external subject matter experts
  • Developing excellent first drafts of materials such as PowerPoints, key messages, briefing or issues notes and policy papers under the direction of more senior consultants
  • Providing account support such as organizing meetings, producing call summaries and creating project schedules / to do lists for policy-heavy files
  • Learning about the policy conditions around different sectors in support of McMillan Vantage’s new business development
