Description:

Processes, especially metabolism of pollutants in the environment and in environmental technology depend on biological and chemical microstructures. These can be observed by mass spectrometric imaging (MSI) with high resolution mass spectrometers. We believe resolving processes at the µm scale will be one important cornerstone in future environmental research.

JOB DESCRIPTION

The candidate is expected to upstart and operate the new facility for mass spectrometry imaging at the department for Environmental Science. This will be conducted in collaboration with the other dedicated groups of the institute, especially in chemistry, water technology and microbiology. The candidate is expected to develop an individual research profile including own projects funded by external funds while harvesting synergies with the existing groups. It is expected the work will focus on mass spectrometric imaging of environmental samples such i)as biofilms, ii)bacterial and fungal microcolonies and their interaction, iii) interactions between plants and microorganisms as well as iv) migration of pollutants through polymeric materials and v)distribution of pollutants in animal tissues.
The work will be conducted in collaboration with the center for advanced water purification.

QUALIFICATIONS

Successful candidates are expected to hold a Master and PhD in Natural, Technical Science or eventually Medical Science and have experience in organic mass spectrometry, especially in mass spectrometric imaging using MALDI ionization.
Ideally the candidate would have experience in mass spectrometry imaging and operating larger mass spectrometry facilities.

Qualifications in the following fields would be seen as positive:

  • Mass spectrometric Imaging
  • MALDI or other relevant ionization technologies for imaging
  • Data handling
  • Microtome cutting.
  • Experience with multi and interdisciplinary projects
  • Biological systems especially in environmental or agricultural context.

To be qualified for an associate professorship at AU the candidate should have a high publication rate as well as experience in teaching, and project management.
