Description:

Our organization:
The Alberta Securities Commission (ASC) is the industry-funded regulator responsible for administering the province’s securities and derivatives laws. It is entrusted with fostering a fair and efficient capital market in Alberta and with protecting investors. As a member of the Canadian Securities Administrators (CSA), the ASC works to improve, coordinate and harmonize the regulation of Canada’s capital markets.
The Market Regulation division oversees equities and derivatives marketplaces, registrants (dealers, advisers, and investment fund managers), market infrastructure entities and industry self-regulatory organizations. With a dynamic team of investment and financial professionals, we are involved in leading-edge projects aimed at balancing effective regulation with our stakeholders’ need for innovation and efficient capital markets. The Market Regulation division works closely with staff from across the ASC and the CSA to coordinating a harmonious approach to capital markets, consumer protection and the regulation of new and emerging business models.
The opportunity:
Reporting to the Team Lead, Registrant Oversight, the Associate Regulatory Analyst is primarily responsible for conducting reviews of the operations of registered firms. These reviews are critical to the ASC’s role in identifying firms and individuals that are not in compliance with regulatory obligations in the Alberta capital market, which prevents future harm to investors and ensures the fair and efficient regulation of market participants.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Analyzing, interpreting, and assessing information as part of compliance reviews and then preparing and presenting written reports and recommendations for market participants and the ASC, with guidance from the Team Lead and Senior Analysts.
  • Interacting with registrants, including in-depth interviews, face-to-face meetings, and clear written correspondence.
  • Researching, preparing, and presenting internal memos covering various matters that Registrant Oversight oversees.
  • Supporting the Registrant Oversight processes to assess and evaluate registrant and industry risks on a continual basis.
  • Assisting with administrative and general matters.
  • Participating in various short and long-term tasks in support of divisional, operational, and strategic initiatives.
  • Interfacing with industry and the public as part of education and outreach initiatives on occasion.

The ideal candidate will possess:

  • A university degree in a business discipline or equivalent.
  • Enrollment in and be working towards a financial designation (e.g. CPA or CFA).
  • Two to four years of work experience in the financial industry, securities regulation, compliance or equivalent.
  • An understanding of, and interest in financial instruments, capital markets and the oversight of market participants.
  • An ability to communicate effectively with market participants, stakeholders, and colleagues.
  • Strong writing skills.
  • Highly developed analytical decision-making and problem-solving skills.
  • The ability to meet tight deadlines, work well in a team environment, and manage multiple priorities in a busy environment.
  • Proficiency in information technology systems including client relationship management and knowledge base software.
