Description:

The Canadian Light Source Inc. (CLSI) is a national research facility of the University of Saskatchewan. CLS produces very bright light to explore the nature and structure of molecules, and serves national and international users from academia, industry, and government institutions.
The Spherical Grating Monochromator (SGM) is a soft x-ray beamline for performing x-ray absorption spectroscopy and microprobe imaging as well as x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy with an emphasis on studying environmental samples and catalytic materials. An easily accessible endstation, utilizing four silicon drift detectors, is highly configurable and ideal for performing in-situ and in-operando experiments.
CLSI is now accepting applications for an Associate Scientist or Scientist position within our Environmental and Earth Sciences department on the SGM Beamline. We seek highly experienced, self-motivated individuals committed to scientific excellence that display adaptability to interdisciplinary collaborations, a proactive approach to instrumentation and problem-solving and effective communication skills. QUALIFICATIONS:

  • For the Associate Scientist level, a relevant undergraduate or Master’s degree is required. For the Scientist level, a relevant Master’s degree or Ph.D. in the physical sciences or engineering is required.
  • A minimum of two years’ of directly related experience with a Master’s degree, or a minimum of one year of related experience with a Ph.D. degree.
  • Experience with x-ray absorption spectroscopy and/or x-ray imaging is required.
  • Experience with ultrahigh vacuum systems, advanced instrument development, and x-ray optics will be strong assets, but are not required.
  • Basic programming skills in python or C++ is an asset.
  • Candidates should demonstrate a clear aptitude for research, particularly in programs requiring collaboration.
    Salary Range: The Salary Range is $69,880 - $94,544 (Associate), $82,278 - $111,318 (Scientist).
    Remuneration: Remuneration will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. A comprehensive benefits package, including supplemental health & dental, life insurance, pension plan, and four weeks’ vacation is part of a competitive compensation package.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide user support to general users, beamteam members, fee-for-service clients, and CLS staff.
  • Supervise and support users to ensure that they are able to perform their scientific experiments in an effective manner.
  • Analyze and solve beamline or technical problems and develop recommendations to solve difficult, complex or unusual problems.
  • Aid the Beamline Responsible in beamline upgrade/maintenance projects.
  • Develop technical expertise in specific areas of beamline operation and instrumentation including software.
  • Prepare beamline documentation and operational manuals.
  • Working flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, is a requirement of the position.
