The Process Engineering group, located in Beerse, Belgium, is a part of the Chemical Process R&D division of Johnson & Johnson Innovative Medicine. This group develops processes to supply large quantities of new chemical entities for both R&D and commercial purposes.
Within the Technology & Engineering group, we conduct technology scouting and develops robust processes by gaining a fundamental understanding of the different unit operations applying sophisticated equipment (automated reactors and PAT tools), modelling, automated screening and simulations in downscale equipment.
This group plays a key role in designing, optimizing and scaling up chemical processes, working closely with other departments in a transdisciplinary environment (process chemistry, high-throughput experimentation group, analytical department, crystallization technology unit, safety testing lab and pilot plant).
Position summary:
We are currently seeking an associate scientist who has practical experience in a laboratory setting, specifically in areas such as organic chemistry, flow chemistry, crystallization, isolation and drying and who is interested in pursuing technological advancements in an industry setting. The successful candidate will be involved in the process development of APIs, using various technologies such as automated batch reactor, various PAT tools, flow reactors, high-throughput experiment platform, solvent resistant nano-filtration etc. The associate scientist will work in a highly dynamic and innovative environment with the opportunity to interact with several collaborators. The applicant must have strong self-motivation, excellent communication and interpersonal abilities, and be able to work both independently and as a team. QUALIFICATIONS
- Min Bachelors or Masters required, depending on role requirementsin the field of chemical engineering, organic chemistry, flow chemistry or crystallization
- Hands-on experience with lab experiments
- Interest in process technology
- Having knowledge of unit operations in chemical processes is an advantage
- A teammate able to collaborate with multi-functional departments
- Engaged scientist, thorough, with record-keeping skills
- Proficient in oral and written scientific English

Responsibilities:
As part of this role, you will generate process and product data to identify the key factors influencing API chemical processes and evaluating critical parameters that can impact product performance on a larger scale. You will use experimental “scale-down” models of process unit operations to assess process parameters and ranges in the laboratory and pilot plant settings, specifically focusing on reaction and downstream processing. Additionally, you will use online PAT tools and independently prioritize and conduct experiments, including preparation, data collection, analysis, and interpretation. Effective communication skills are important, as you will collaborate with collaborators both within and outside the department to discuss experimental plans.
