ABOUT US

Our story began in 1998 when Mark Dixon, a university statistics lecturer, decided to set up a one-man-band consultancy, offering statistical modelling and research services. Featuring near the top of a Yellow Pages listing was a priority at the time and led to Mark opting for ‘Advanced Training and Statistical Services,’ or ATASS for short. Increasingly, his love of football led him to take on more and more sports-related work, and, by 2001, he and a handful of colleagues were working under the new identity of ATASS Sports.
We are a leader in the field of the application of statistical modelling in sports. We have created and continue to develop a collection of statistical and mathematical models that allow sporting outcomes to be predicted with unparalleled accuracy. Click here to read more about us!

Responsibilities:

We are looking for inquisitive undergraduates to join us for a seven-week internship from Monday 7th July to Friday 22nd August 2025.
During the internship, you’ll be working in small teams on a variety of different sporting projects. Most of the work will be done in the statistical programming language R. No previous experience in R is necessary, as full training will be provided during the first week of the programme.

Previous intern projects have covered a wide variety of topics, including:

  • Predicting results in the English Premier League
  • Developing an effective method for modelling kick difficulty in rugby union
  • Modelling player accuracy in darts
  • Investigating the effect of breaking first in snooker

We’re looking for second or third year students studying mathematics, computer science, or a closely related numerical subject, who are enthusiastic problem solvers.
We are particularly seeking those with excellent mathematical and/or programming skills who are have an interest in applying these skills to model and forecast the results of sports events.
