Salary will be commensurate with experience in accordance with the Academic Teaching Staff (ATS) agreement.
Location - This role is in-person at North Campus Edmonton.

POSITION

The Faculty of Kinesiology, Sport, and Recreation is seeking to fill an 8 month contract academic teaching staff (ATS position) in Therapeutic Recreation Program Development. Specific to the Therapeutic Recreation program development role, it will focus on providing pedagogical and administrative leadership regarding development of therapeutic recreation courses and the framework for recreation degree (Bachelors of Arts in Recreation, Sport, and Tourism; BARST) integration, and a post degree certificate in therapeutic recreation in KSR. The role is 100% teaching and teaching related duties.
Working closely with the Associate Dean Undergraduate and the Experiential Learning Lead, this position will be responsible for developing an undergraduate degree stream and post degree certificate framework in Therapeutic Recreation that meets the requirements of the Canadian Therapeutic Recreation Association (CTRA) for the Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS) designation. They will be responsible for planning a suite of Therapeutic Recreation courses (calendar descriptions, learning objectives, content outlines)(~80%). Teaching in the area of therapeutic recreation and developing a strategy for accessing and maintaining a network for KSR students seeking therapeutic recreation placements and internships may also be assigned (~20%).
This position requires primarily in-person teaching-related activities, on the University of Alberta Campus, to facilitate operational needs of the Faculty students’ progress through their degree program as well.

QUALIFICATIONS

• Masters in Recreation, Leisure Studies or related area,
• Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist,
• 2 years of experience in therapeutic recreation practice,
• Demonstrated teaching excellence at the post-secondary level,
• Proven success in building strong collaborative relationships inside and outside of the University,
• Experience in post secondary course design and/or course development.
• A commitment to learner-centered innovative teaching and learning practices, and continuous quality improvement;
• Committed to the creation to of safe and supportive learning and working environments, including knowledge of and commitment to KSR and U of A equity, diversity and inclusivity (EDI) policies and practices;
• Ability to collaborate and engage in shared decision making within a team;
• Demonstrated accountability and responsibility for carrying out duties and activities assigned and/or agreed upon;
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills (verbal and written);
• Exceptional organization skills and attention to detail;
• Elearning development skills and experience are an asset.

• Assisting with Therapeutic Recreation job market analysis and research regarding therapeutic recreation academic offerings across Canada.
• Consultation with key stakeholders (e.g. Alberta Therapeutic Recreation Association, CTRA, students, KSR faculty, College of Health Sciences faculty, program administrators), and applying this to curriculum development.
• Play a lead role in developing (working closely with our Associate Dean Undergraduate, Manager Academic Programs, and Experiential Learning Lead) an undergraduate stream in therapeutic recreation in our BARST degree, a post degree certificate and suite of 4-6 therapeutic recreation courses that meet CTRA requirements. Assist in mapping the budget of these offerings and if applicable, guiding proposals through governance. Written proposals developed to describe degree stream, certificate and courses.
• Work collaboratively and liaise between the KSR Student Service Office, and University of Alberta units including the College of Health Sciences, Office of Education, the Center for Teaching and Learning, the Career Center and Community Service-Learning Program;
• Follow U of A and KSR policies and procedures in regards to developing course and post certificate degree structure/content;
• Other administrative duties as assigned by the Associate Dean Undergraduate;
• In collaboration with the KSR Experiential Learning Lead, provide administrative support to KSR Students seeking therapeutic recreation placements and internships;
• Teach courses as assigned in the KSR undergraduate program;
• Participate in relevant discussion with the KSR Undergraduate Programs Committee.
