This role will predominantly be undertaken remotely, with occasional in-person attendance required to meet business needs or for training and other necessary onsite activities.

About the College/Department
Our College of Science and Engineering is made up of the School of Science, School of Computing, School of Sport and Exercise Science, and School of Engineering. We are the University’s STEM College, in a city with a strong STEM heritage that hosts some of the world’s leading STEM companies, and in a region with STEM at the centre of its economic growth plan.
About the role
You are invited for the following authoring opportunity within the discipline of environmental sciences, the authoring will commence in February 2025.

Module(s) which require Authoring:

  • 5EV511 - Principles of Housing Construction and Surveying (100%)
  • 5EV512 - Housing Tenure and Role of Local Authorities (100%)
  • 5EV513 - Housing Law and Enforcement (100%)

You will be responsible for writing and developing self-study academic content and materials for learners studying online. Authors will be expected to be academically competent to create learning materials and activities at the appropriate level and methods. It is also desirable to have professional experience in industry. You will be expected to work closely with colleagues in the University of Derby Online Learning (UDOL) to ensure high quality content, materials and learning experience for all learners. Your authoring will be supported and co-ordinated by the UDOL content team and the Academic Lead, who will review as your work progresses. We are able to offer assistance with technology enhancement features and graphic design.
This is an excellent opportunity for you to contribute to the ongoing development of our curriculum. Successful authors will be paid upon completion £2658.61 per module.

About You
We are looking for a qualified professional with a diploma or degree in Environmental Health, Housing, or a related field—or equivalent professional experience. Membership with a relevant professional body, such as CIH or CIEH, is essential.
The ideal candidate will have experience developing and authoring university-level content or materials, along with practical expertise in housing regulation or tenancy management.

Principal accountabilities

  • To author and develop online content and materials in accordance with the scope of work set out within the Schedule of Work and in line with the University of Derby Online Learning Academic Framework.
  • To utilise appropriate teaching, learning and support techniques to create an academically challenging environment that supports learners in their development.
  • To develop content which creates a supportive learning environment and promotes engagement in a ‘community of practice’ within the learner group.
  • To undertake appropriate research that ensures learning materials utilise a variety of sources whilst utilising appropriate referencing systems to maintain academic standards.
  • To write structured and engaging content in an active tone making best use of appropriate multi-media elements.
  • To peer-review other authored content and to give feedback as part of the quality framework.
  • To have up to date subject knowledge within relevant discipline.
  • To develop content in accordance with the module requirements and the University’s assessment regulations.
  • To work closely with both the Senior Online Tutor and Project Manager identified in the Schedule of Work, providing the Project Manager with bi-weekly updates on the progress of the development of the online content.
  • To contribute to The University’s Quality Assurance and Quality Enhancement process by reviewing module content and delivery mechanisms in order to contribute to the continuous development of the module.
  • To participate in an induction programme and engage with staff development and other professional development opportunities as required.
  • To refer specific queries and concerns to the Project Manager in a timely manner.
  • To adhere to University systems and procedures and ensure that you have a working knowledge of the University’s academic regulations.
  • To undertake any other reasonable duty commensurate with the level of responsibility of the post.

Person specification

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Diploma or degree in Environmental Health or a housing related subject, or have equivalent professional experience
  • Membership of a relevant professional body for example CIH or CIEH

EXPERIENCE

  • Experience of developing/writing/authoring content or material for modules at university level
  • Experience in the field of housing regulation or tenancy management

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE & ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of recent and current development and experience of contemporary issues within the subject area at the appropriate level
  • Knowledge and understanding of key theories in relation to the relevant subject area and their application in practice
