Status: Full-time Regular (12 months), Exempt
Department: Adirondack Watershed Institute
Reports to: AWI Deputy Director
Pay: $78,000.00 annual salary

DESCRIPTION:

The Paul Smith’s College Adirondack Watershed Institute Senior Research Scientist supports the growth of AWI’s freshwater research and outreach programs. This position is responsible for overseeing the largest and longest running surface water monitoring program in the Adirondack Park. The position will work directly with AWI’s Deputy Director and AWI scientists to lead research and monitoring efforts to advance our understanding of human impacts on aquatic resources, and to develop and advance solutions to protect clean water. This position is part of the AWI leadership team.

QUALIFICATIONS AND PREFERENCES:

  • PhD in Limnology, Aquatic Ecology, or Environmental Science.
  • Five years of work experience in aquatic and environmental science.
  • Experience managing field projects including familiarity with using and maintaining field equipment, safety protocols, and ability to be outdoors in remote settings.
  • Excellent quantitative analytical skills as evidenced by senior authorship of independent research in high quality peer-reviewed scientific journals.
  • Experience in data analysis and management using R & python.
  • Experience developing and managing multiple research projects including writing detailed scientific papers on research findings for publication in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Familiarity with the geography and natural and human history of the Adirondack region.
  • Experience working with the public and other collaborators.
  • Demonstrated ability to translate science for successful outcomes.
  • Demonstrated experience in community-engagement and partnership development.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills including experience presenting at scientific meetings and other forums.
  • Knowledge and skill in developing web content, managing social media, and using graphic design software (Adobe InDesign & Photoshop).
  • Proficient project management skills including grant writing and administration, supervising staff, and developing project reports.
  • Ability to perform duties independently and proactively in a fast-paced, multi-tasking, collaborative work environment.
  • Ability to professionally represent the principles of the AWI and the College.
  • Ability to work some weekends and holidays.
  • New York State driver’s license and driving record acceptable to PSC insurance carrier and AWI, which will enable authorization to drive College-owned vehicles.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead the long-range planning and project management of AWI’s water quality programs.
  • Lead AWI’s water quality research and monitoring efforts including seeking opportunities funding and collaboration, and publishing research in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Supervise and coach the Research Scientist, Research Associate, and Field Technicians
  • Coordinate AWI’s aquatic plant and water quality field work including developing research methodologies, overseeing field operations and field staff, and project reporting.
  • Develop and manage database systems to handle real-time reporting of environmental data and provide access to environmental data processed from the laboratory.
  • Work with AWI’s leadership team to identify and cultivate funding opportunities to support AWI’s work including grant opportunities, private donors, and fee for service.
  • Coordinate with partners, e.g., lake associations, municipalities, other institutions, to collaborate on projects including developing shared goals and managing work agreements.
  • Serve as main point of contact for aquatic ecology and limnology issues with the general public and our collaborators.
  • Present AWI research and findings at public and professional meetings.
  • Publish AWI research in peer-reviewed scientific journals.
  • Collaborate with AWI staff to develop and participate in public education workshops and events.
