Description:
Here at UHCW we are looking for a highly motivated , enthusiastic team player looking to join large theatre department that consists of 22 operating theatres. The post holder will provide clinical leadership to ensure a high level of operational effectiveness and a safe working environment in a way that supports all staff. To work through organisational limitations and with multidisciplinary teams to coordinate the operational management of main theatres on a day-to-day basis. To work closely with all specialities to optimise patient flow. The post holder will be responsible for the co-ordination of day-to-day effective management of theatre lists, including the running of services and allocation of staff. They will be responsible for directing and overseeing main theatres daily activities closely with the Manager of the day (MOD) for Theatres.
General Responsibilities
- Ensure all theatre staff is efficiently deployed and there is sufficient skill mix to support optimum service delivery. Ensuring that patient safety and staff well-being is always maintained.
- Checking work rotas on daily basis to cover the needs of the department.
- Respond accordingly to the variable requirements of theatre activity as it changes during day, prioritizing, to meet service needs.
- Demonstrate highly developed knowledge and experience of all clinical specialities and services requirements.
- Liaise with medical and ward staff to maximise the efficient running lists.
- Recording of absence and maintain documentation within the department correctly in line with trust policy, procedures and guidelines e.g. sickness, absence issues and disciplinary procedure, following through with appropriate actions and advice as necessary.
- A resource for staff, advising on national, local and Trust policy and procedures / guidelines, ensuring that clinical governance is embedded in practice.
- Using effective communication in the distribution and understanding of information, ensuring all relevant individuals and departments obtain appropriate information and updates.
- Support patients, carers and staff during difficult situations arising in the clinical area, e.g. following an unexpected event.

Clinical Responsibilities
- Assist and advice all staff in the delivery of patient care.
- Acknowledge personal preferences, rights and choice of patients undergoing surgery.
- Maintain health, safety and the control of infection in clinical work areas in line with Trust policies and procedures.
- Prepare, monitor, report and maintain materials and equipment for clinical procedures.
- Act as a patients’ advocate.
- Ensure all cleaning and maintenance is undertaken daily.
- Ensure all faults are reported and rectified effectively and efficiently.
- Promote high standards of care by demonstrating the ability to improve and empower the team, along with acting as a role model always.
- Liaise and work closely with the emergency Co-ordinators to facilitate emergency cases been done in timely manner, interrupting elective cases when needed. This includes any obstetric emergencies.
- Escalating and liaising with clinical managers over cancellations and list changes.
- Use of managerial computer systems and programmes to assist in the everyday running of the theatre lists.e.g. ESR
- Trouble shooting and liaising with the appropriate people to ensure the day to day running theatre lists.
Communication
- Ensure effective communication paths are maintained within the theatre department.
- Liaise with estates and medical engineering to ensure safe and effective running of theatres.
- Provide expert advice to all theatre staff and lead day to day problem solving and planning.
- Communicate complex, sensitive information concerning patients, relatives, staff and operational issues requiring negotiation and diplomatic skills to relevant staff.
- Responsible for ensuring that all staff are well informed of any changes occurring within the working day particularly in relations to operating sessions.
- Communications effectively always and maintain a harmonious working environment.
- Be able to effectively support a team member who is experiencing distress which could affect working performance.
- Participate and lead team meetings, huddles maintaining effective communications between all staff members, departmental, trust wide and externally.
Educational
- Attend study days/ courses relevant to needs identified on Professional Development review.
- Attend Trust Mandatory study days in accordance with Trust Policies.
- Ensure revalidation and registration requirements are maintained in line with NMC and HCPC guidelines.
