Description:

MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES OBJECTIVES OF THE POST To exercise leadership and demonstrate experienced nursing skill and competence To monitor workload activity within the Ward / Department and liaise with the bed manager to promote the best and most productive use of patient capacity. To have an understanding of resource management and to be actively involved with the ordering of supplies/equipment within the Trust financial policies To maintain and develop professional knowledge and competence showing evidence of this To hold or be working towards a recognised post graduate orthopaedic qualification To supervise junior staff at all levels and ensure that the agreed standards of orthopaedic nursing is provided To assist senior sister / senior charge nurse with the implementation of Government / NHS papers and policie To be actively involved with professional / nursing groups within the Trust as requested by the Senior sister/charge nurs To organise ward / unit / department meetings and cascade information to staff as required. To carry out extended scope of practice, such as cannulation, phlebotomy, catheterisation etc To participate in internal department rotation, encouraging the delivery of high quality care To maintain confidentiality of information regarding patients and staff as required by the NMC code of Professional standards of practice and behaviour for nurses Ensure you attend statutory and mandatory training and maintain annual compliance. WARD MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITIE To participate in management of the hospital as necessary as clinical site co-ordinator per the requirements of the clinical site co-ordinator rota To support the implementation and upkeep of team nursing Act as a mentor, student assessor, supervisor, preceptor and role model to junior nursing staff and health care assistants.
Undertake and teach our discharge protocols / guidance To ensure that nursing practices within your area comply with the Trusts policies and procedures Assist staff in the planning, implementation and evaluation of the care given to patients, whilst monitoring quality standards 2.6 To have the ability to work with and develop ward/department teams. 2.7 To audit and review the effectiveness of the nursing care provided, being actively involved in the development of protocols of care given in the department. 2.8 To take responsibility to undertake and assist in the staff appraisal process as per Trust policy. 2.9 Monitor and manage the performance of junior nursing staff with the support of the senior sister /senior charge nurse.
Participate in the planning and review of duty rotas in line with workload demands and budgetary constraints. Organize and deploy staff as per competencies and workload to meet patients needs Maintain safe custody of controlled drugs and ensure compliance with Trust Medicines Management policies and processe Ensure that the Policy for the Health and Safety at Work Act is adhered to and the implementation of COSHH. Also, to assist in procedures relating to these topics To actively assist the senior sister/charge nurse in: . The recruitment and selection of nursing staff .
Induction of staff to the area . Audit and quality assurance programme To participate and assist in setting standards of care based on sound research findings To maintain a safe environment for all patients, visitors and staff per the Trusts policy on Health & Safety and Health & Safety legislation To ensure security of ward / department, including the opening and closing as required Assist the ward manager/senior sister in ensuring all ward / department staff attend statutory and mandatory training and maintain annual compliance To undertake any other appropriate role or duty as instructed by the senior sister/senior charge nurse 2.19 Support the senior sister/senior charge nurse with succession planning by leading and developing the workforce to create ward leaders of the future. EDUCATION To work alongside staff to improve their skills and to disseminate best practice To assume an active role in self-development by keeping up to date with current issues and new developments to meet the needs of the ward and the organisation To fully participate in the process of identifying personal development plans requirements and assist the senior sister/ senior charge nurse in ensuring that such needs are met as part of the PDR process Assist with the assessments and education of staff within the ward/department and Trust, acting as mentor/assessor and facilitator as required To participate in and when appropriate or requested to perform, initiate research projects and audit that will lead to improved Clinical outcomes or changes in care provision in line with Clinical governance 3.6 To teach students, trainees and junior staff informally in the ward environment and to take part in Trust wide education schemes as required. RESEARCH Develop an awareness of nursing and medical research and its application to orthopaedics and using the analysis to improve quality of care within the Trus Assist in the planning and implementation of new ideas and innovations to improve patient care To participate in a research and clinical audits and to have improved knowledge for self-development.
