We are looking to add a full-time Battery Scientist I (B.S.) to our team in Beltsville, MD. This exciting entry-level position reports to the Senior Manager of Cell Development and will target improved understanding of our next-generation lithium-based battery technology at the cell level. This work will be achieved through characterization of component materials, assembly and testing of batteries, electrochemical experiments, and data analysis. Candidates for this position should possess a strong desire to learn new experimental and analytical techniques along with the underlying electrochemical and mechanical fundamentals.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE:

B.S. in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Materials Science, Electrical Engineering, or related field
<2 years laboratory-based, industrial experience, post-graduation (entry-level)
Demonstrable exposure to materials characterization, analyses or prototyping

REQUIRED SKILLS:

Demonstrated ability to communicate the results of an experiment to team members
Excitement and interest in custom experimental design
Ability to communicate clearly and effectively
Excellent teamwork and organizational skills
Maintain a high-degree of emotional intelligence and adaptability to the fast-changing pace of a start-up environment
Encouraged, but not required:
Internship or limited experience at a cell manufacturer, preferred
Experience presenting research to a technical audience

Responsibilities:

Perform research on electrochemical cells and their component materials using ION’s extensive in-house collection of instrumentation via electrochemical experiments, mechanical characterization, materials characterization, and destructive physical analysis
Learn to fabricate prototypes of ION’s unique battery technology and conduct testing with a focus on scientific rigor, repeatability, and strong statistical analyses
Work with senior staff to design experiments to analyze the properties of electrochemical cells and cell components
Effectively document and communicate experimental design, results, and uncertainties
Identify opportunities to improve R&D processes for better reproducibility, yield, and safety
Maintain lab cleanliness and promote health and safety in the workplace
