STI Federal is currently seeking a Biological Scientist, Level 2 / Laboratory Coordinator who understands and conducts research and public health evaluation activities to develop and assess new diagnostic methods and improve existing diagnostic methods to allow for more rapid response to potential influenza and other pathogen outbreaks and the development and improvement of vaccines. The right candidate must also have previous experience with animal model studies and/or protocols.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

• Bachelor of Arts (BA), Bachelor of Science (BS), or a Masters of Science (MS) and at least 4 years of experience in Biology, Molecular Biology, Microbiology, or related biological science.
• Virology/wet laboratory experience in maintaining a research laboratory
• Experience with equipment maintenance and calibration
• Prior experience working with viruses, animal models, to include Ferret studies and or influenza is a plus

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

• Experience with molecular biology techniques
• Experience working in a molecular/microbiological science laboratory
• Knowledge of basic molecular biology techniques including ELISA, RT-PCR, NGS, and cloning.
• Excellent organizational, documentation and record keeping skills.
• Ability to follow strict timing guidelines for all scheduled operations and experiments.
• Work in a BSL2E and/or BSL3E
• Ability to accurately collect, collate and enter data into a database
• Experience with data analysis software to include Microsoft Excel

• Provide overarching lab support, maintenance, logistics, inventory, and compliance support for the laboratories
• Support the daily activities in the research laboratory and supports the work of researchers -maintains records of all laboratory activities including experimental results, laboratory inventories, reports, queries, and data
• Ensures adherence to lab standards and practices to maximize safety and operational effectiveness
• Conduct laboratory testing in vitro and in animal models
• Develop standard operating procedures (SOP)s
• Conduct research and diagnostic tasks in Biosafety Level 2 Enhanced/Plus (BSL2E) and Biosafety Level 3 Enhanced/Plus (BSL3E) laboratories
• Train junior staff
• Perform study design, data collection and analysis in support of clinical trials of influenza vaccines to demonstrate improved immunity, and in support of field studies to evaluate vaccine effectiveness of licensed vaccines
• Ability to work both independently and as a team
• Excellent organizational, documentation and record keeping skills
• Reports findings to scientific a lead
