We are seeking an enthusiastic and dedicated Biomedical Science Assistant (Higher level) to support the Scientific and Consultant teams in the department of Histology at the Rotherham Hospital NHS Trust.
Rotherham Histopathology currently processes all Histopathology Specimens from both The Rotherham Hospital Foundation Trust and Barnsley Hospital Foundation Trust. This equates to approximately 30,000 histopathology requests per year, 1200 non-gynaecological cytology specimens and 800 andrology specimens.
The post will be based at the Rotherham Hospital Foundation Trust.
Working hours are split between two shift patterns, alternating weekly between 0800-1600 and 1000-1800.
There is also an expectation that the successful candidate will work one in 10 Saturdays.
The successful candidate will be required to undertake roles in specimen reception, specimen dissection transcription, specimen processing as well as a range of other duties including computer data entry, slide scanning for Digital pathology, operation of laboratory equipment, filing and retrieval of specimens, glass slides and paraffin blocks.
Pre-analytical processing of samples to include the receipt, preparation and processing.
Deal with direct queries from Medical Staff, Nursing Staff and other Service Users including telephone enquiries and taking appropriate action as necessary.
Preparation of slides to load and unload digital pathology scanners.
To assist Scientific Staff in laboratory activities.
To store and retrieve biological material.

The Rotherham Histopathology department deals with multiple tissue specimens (biopsy, surgical resection, cytology and post mortem examination) and includes expertise in:
Dermatopathology; breast, gynaecology, endocrine, genito-urinary & gastro-intestinal pathology. The department is UKAS accredited and adheres to ISO15189:2022.
The Department is part of the larger South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw Partnership (SYBP). The aim of the Partnership is to deliver a Pathology Service that provides all SYB patients and clinicians with equitable access to high-quality, innovative laboratory medicine solutions that will ensure the best clinical outcomes for patients.
The South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw Pathology Partnership are invested in training, developing, and supporting staff in all aspects including academic courses from certificates of achievement, registration, specialist and higher specialist IBMS portfolios, apprenticeships and leadership and management qualifications.
