Description:

We are looking to appoint enthusiastic, committed, Band 5 Biomedical scientists to join us in providing a first rate Biochemistry service at NUH.
We are seeking good team players who will work in the Biochemistry section of Clinical Pathology contributing to its on-going strategic development.
A commitment to continuing education and training is fundamental. A meticulous and conscientious approach is required. Successful candidates will demonstrate good interpersonal skill through the ability to communicate clearly and have the ability to analyse facts and situations in order to make appropriate assessments.
The ideal candidate would be registered as a Biomedical Scientist with the Health and Care Professions Council although applications will be accepted from those wishing to complete their registration portfolio.
As HCPC registered Biomedical Scientist, the post holder will be a member of the departmental team and assist in the delivery of a quality driven and cost effective service consistent with Nottingham University Hospitals Trust’s objectives.
To provide that service in a manner commensurate with the profession.
The post holders’ main role is to carry out the examination of pathological samples using various technologies and to report or present the results as appropriate. This will involve competency in a range of laboratory techniques and computer literacy.
The post holder will be expected to participate in the departmental shift system roster which provides 24/7 diagnostic service cover for the Trust and users of the Service so competence will be gained in techniques allowing participation in the delivery of the Pathology service outside core hours.

NUH NHS Trust is a large, teaching hospital comprising two sites, the Queens Medical Centre and the City Hospital.
Biomedical Scientists work in laboratories at both sites on a rotational basis.
The Biochemistry team contributes to the development of laboratory services which are patient focussed. These include both 24/7 acute, highly automated functions and specialist services embracing Trisomy Screening, Myeloma monitoring, Inborn Errors of Metabolism investigation and Immunosuppressant drug monitoring.
The Biochemistry laboratory is an IBMS accredited training provider.
Carry out all laboratory analyses associated with the post, including reporting results, maintaining appropriate records and documentation.
Participate in the department’s rosters as required.
Undertake quality control procedures, examine quality control results to identify poor performance and instigate appropriate action.
Participate in the operation and routine maintenance of equipment.
Ensure that personal work activity is managed to make effective use of time and maintain an adequate supply of laboratory consumables, reagents and equipment.
Ensure the competent and efficient use of computerised data management systems.
Assist in the supervision, training and teaching of staff and participate in the department’s training plan.
Maintain ongoing Professional Portfolio and update Professional Development Plan.
Undertake courses and other activities to satisfy HPC Continuing Professional Development requirements.
Assist with the development of new methods and the implementation of new technology.
Maintain standards of laboratory policies and procedures to ensure that the department meets National External Quality Assurance and Accreditation standards.
Assist with the production, maintenance and implementation of Standard Operating Procedures.
Ensure that safe working practices are followed in accordance with departmental Safety Policy.
Be aware of and adhere to Trusts policies, including those relating to discipline, grievance, sickness, absence and health and safety.
Ensure compliance with all statutory and legislative requirements including patient confidentiality and the Data Protection Act.
Work flexibly and undertake other duties commensurate with the grade as required.
