JOB DESCRIPTION
Work Arrangement: Hybrid : This role is categorized as hybrid. This means the successful candidate is expected to report to Markham Elevation Centre (MEC) or Oshawa Elevation Centre (OEC) three times per week, at minimum.
At General Motors, we are looking for a hard-working person who enjoys taking on challenges and following through with robust solutions to join our Body Controls Calibration team! Calibration engineers work with vehicles, software, and algorithms to design and release Body Control Module (BCM)/External Lighting Module (ELM) calibrations to meet customer designs and performance requirements. The Calibration Technical Specialist is the person that provides guidance and clear direction on how to execute all necessary calibration tasks/processes. They are looked to as the calibration experts, as well as the go to person on all things related to calibration for the Body Domain.
YOUR SKILLS & ABILITIES (REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS)
- Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics, or a related Engineering degree.
- Minimum of 10 years of technical engineering experience
- Strong background calibration and testing.
- Strong leadership skills, able to drive global and industry decisions.
- Demonstrated ability to direct and develop others in a technical environment.
- Strong interpersonal styles and communication methods to work effectively with cross-functional partners to meet mutual goals.
- In depth knowledge of vehicle systems and understanding of engineering theory and principles of operation of mechanical/electrical mechanisms.
- Forward thinking with eye for implementing efficiencies and automation.
- Valid driver’s license and ability to operate test vehicles.
What Will Give You A Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications)
- Master of Science in Engineering.
- 7+ years of experience with in-vehicle testing, including of tools (ETAS/INCA, Intrepid/VSPY) for data acquisition and analysis of complex problems.
- DRE Experience.
- Experience with scripting (Matlab, Python, etc.) to support automation and making processes more efficient.
- Body Calibration or software experience.
- Knowledge of control theory, model-based design.
- Automotive OEM experience.
Responsibilities:
THE ROLE
This is a top-level calibration position. The successful candidate will be responsible for responsible for defining Body Domain Calibration Standard Work and Roadmap, leading the Body Calibration Community Practice, and assisting in Diagnostic and Control System Development and Integration, enabling exceptional GM customer satisfaction. You will be the person that the calibrators, and Software Strategists go to for direction. Span of control will include work on multiple body domain features and functions, multiple product lines (Gas, Diesel, Electrification, Hybrid), systems that are subject to regulatory compliance (ex FMVSS/CMVSS, etc.) and collaboration with key global development teams.
Some travel is expected, primarily to Michigan and other locations in the US and Canada.
WHAT YOU’LL DO
- Subject Matter Expert in body calibration functional areas
- understand the requirements and configurations behind the physical system and the implemented diagnostics and control methodology.
- Lead the Calibration Community of Practice for the Body Domain:
- Set Direction for Best Practices, Procedures and Reviews.
- Create and maintain documented procedures to calibrate systems to meet product goals and provide feedback for continuous improvement.
- Provide best practice in calibration settings for the Calibration Bill of Materials (Cal BOM) and development of calibration execution guides.
- Identify and document calibration vulnerabilities and build mitigation action plans; track corrective actions.
- Identify shortcomings in the calibration processes with the mindset of eliminating errors and implement efficiencies when possible (Processes, tools, etc.)
- Responsible to negotiate the resolution of conflicts between control system needs, functional safety, control system hardware and diagnostic calibration requirements.
- Work collaboratively with other domains with a view to be consistent with the GM common Process of Engineering (POE) for calibration.
- Keep abreast of industry trends, technologies, and best practices.
- Technical Leadership and development of the Body Calibration Team:
- Provide technical mentoring and help train new calibration engineers on calibration processes and strategy.
- Lead/Guide Calibration Engineers in development of Body Configuration/Performance Calibrations for deployment to GM Vehicle Programs
- Lead Calibration Reviews with Calibration Engineers, Software Strategists, and Lead Calibrators.
- Lead troubleshooting activities for complex system issues across programs.
- Adhere to all safety requirements, treat safety as the top priority and lead by example during all work activities.
