About us
DS Smith has grown significantly through recent years via acquisitive growth and as a result we have a number of different management and information systems scattered across the estate. We have similar but not identical systems that are doing similar functions in different regions (e.g. multiple ERP systems). Therefore, as part of our global I&T strategy, DS Smith is seeking to accelerate the use of Digital, and Data technologies and processes to create value and enable organic growth.
A key part of this is creating this “next generation” data infrastructure is the creation and operation of our Enterprise data Platform (which we call the “Data Factory”) for the entire business to use to leverage and exploit our data. The Data Factory includes both the underpinning cloud architecture in which to store our data as well as the necessary tools (e.g. data extraction tools) and capabilities (e.g. data analytics) to exploit. For the cloud architecture we have selected AWS as our strategic cloud partner and the data tools and capabilities are being key 3rd parties.
About the role
The Business Analyst (Digital Innovation) will play a key role in supporting the Head of Digital Engagement and the broader digital team by gathering requirements, analyzing data, identifying improvement opportunities, and defining technical solutions for new digital and data products. You will serve as a liaison between business stakeholders and D&D team by translating business needs into actionable technical specifications and requirements for digital platforms and data integration projects aimed at enhancing customer and consumer digital experiences. Leveraging analytics skills and technical knowledge, you will provide recommendations to optimize digital channels, improve data utilization, and drive digital transformation initiatives.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Gather and document business requirements from stakeholders across functions through interviews, workshops, and data analysis. Translate needs into technical specifications for digital engagement projects.
  • Conduct analytics and research to identify data availability, data quality issues, and opportunities to optimize data utilization and digital platforms to meet digital engagement goals and objectives.
  • Liaise between business teams and IT to convey requirements, priorities, and feasibility of data and digital solutions for digital engagement initiatives. Ensure technical teams understand user needs.
  • Support the rollout of data and digital projects by coordinating user acceptance testing, training, and communications.
  • Monitor adoption, utilization and performance of digital engagement tools and data assets. Highlight further improvement opportunities to the Head of Digital Engagement.
  • Deputize for the Head of Digital Engagement in working with senior stakeholders on digital engagement strategy and governance. Advocate for data quality, security, compliance and ethical data utilization.
  • Stay on top of industry trends, innovations, and best practices in leveraging data and digital technologies to enhance customer experience and meet digital engagement goals.
  • Make recommendations for implementation to the Head of Digital Engagement.
  • Conduct stakeholder interviews and workshops to gather requirements for digital engagement initiatives. Document needs, challenges, goals and user journeys.
  • Perform analytics on digital channel data to uncover trends, issues and opportunities to improve customer experience and digital adoption.
  • Map out technical specifications and data requirements for digital platforms and integration tools based on business needs.
  • Coordinate user acceptance testing and data validation to ensure new digital engagement platforms and datasets meet specifications.
  • Create guides, FAQs and training programs to aid business users in adoption of new digital tools. Measure usage and address barriers to adoption.
  • Monitor digital products performance through web analytics and metrics. Highlight optimization opportunities and create proposals for improvements.
  • Develop protocols, policies and metrics to govern utilization of data for personalization and ensure ethical use of customer data across channels.
  • Liaise with IT teams, translating business needs and guiding technical direction for digital experience initiatives. Ensure alignment with business objectives.

About you:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field such as Business, Analytics, Information Systems, or Computer Science.
  • Previous experience as a business analyst gathering requirements, conducting data analysis, and defining technical specifications.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills to convey details to both business and technical teams.
  • Proficiency with data visualization, analytics, and business intelligence tools such as Tableau, Power BI, etc.
  • Understanding of web analytics tools and digital metrics.
  • Knowledge of customer journey mapping and user experience design principles.
  • Agile software development methodologies experience.
  • Technical aptitude and ability to translate requirements into functional specifications.
  • Experience with digital platforms and integration tools a plus.
  • Detail-oriented with ability to manage multiple priorities and projects.
  • Knowledge of data governance, security, privacy and compliance protocols.
