About this position
This is a new role that will play a key function in furthering the purpose of Health Justice Australia. The Business Development Lead will contribute significantly to our revenue strategy by building on existing connections and creating new relationships; applying for grants with philanthropic, corporate, research and government funders; and, scoping, and driving forward new revenue opportunities through a range of avenues, including fee for service.
This role will be supervised by the Strategic Advocacy Manager, reflecting the work we do under our revenue strategy to influence funders as part of our systems change agenda. The role will also work collaboratively across the organisation to align revenue and resourcing with Health Justice Australia’s purpose and strategic priorities.

Roles and responsibilities

  • Build on current funding relationships in collaboration with the CEO and HJA senior team.
  • Identify and cultivate new relationships with corporate and philanthropic trusts and foundations, research and government bodies.
  • Create or identify and respond to grant opportunities that are in keeping with Health Justice Australia’s purpose, revenue strategy and strategic priorities.
  • Manage the grant application process from end-to-end including grant writing, management, reporting and acquittal.
  • Work in collaboration with the whole Health Justice Australia team to develop accurate and compelling funding submission content.
  • Maintain records within the Health Justice Australia CRM and Microsoft suite.
  • Actively monitor deadlines and milestones ensuring cross-organisational dependencies are planned for and met in a timely manner.
  • Work with our communications team to generate resources and content that articulates the value of our work with our partner funders.
  • Scope new revenue and partnership opportunities for Health Justice Australia, and in conjunction with the CEO, lead the exploration and development of these streams of work e.g., government procurement/tenders, corporate partners, and collaboration with education and training sectors.
  • Support the ongoing refinement and implementation of processes which underpin Health Justice Australia’s revenue strategy e.g., an ethical decision-making framework and partner engagement strategy.
  • Represent Health Justice Australia in forums, conferences and other stakeholder meetings as delegated and required.
  • Provide internal reports as required.
  • Other duties as required.

Essential criteria

  • Experience in a similar role with proven success in identifying, securing and managing funding and business development opportunities.
  • Excellent verbal communication skills as well as proven writing ability.
  • Ability to build and support strategic relationships with government and non-government funders.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with a range of internal and external stakeholders.
  • Excellent organisational skills, including capacity to manage changing priorities and deliver work to agreed and often tight deadlines without compromising quality.
  • Commitment to Health Justice Australia’s values and a genuine interest in the challenges of improving outcomes for people experiencing multiple and complex intersecting needs.
  • Advanced computer skills, including Microsoft 365.

Desirable criteria

  • Understanding of philanthropic landscape in Australia.
  • Existing relationships with philanthropic, corporate, research and/or government funders.
  • Degree in public health, social science, law or a related discipline or equivalent industry experience.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the social determinants of health, legal need and justice issues.
  • Understanding of social policy and human service environments across governments.
