Responsibilities:

ROLE PURPOSE

As Business Manager, you will have a key role to play in the smooth running of the team. You will be required to manage a wide range of tasks that are often urgent, complex and sensitive. You must therefore be able to build a sound, high level knowledge of the business as well as be adaptable, calm under pressure, be able to handle a range of issues with diplomacy, discretion and a “can do” attitude. The Business Manager is responsible for supporting the Head of TaxCoE in the day to day duties, ensuring that they are fully briefed on all pertinent issues in readiness to represent the team and Tax CoE at both internal and external meetings.
You will also need to be able to identify and handle potential risks, knowing when to tackle issues directly and when to escalate to the Head of Tax CoE and senior team.
You will be expected to work effectively with senior colleagues within the Tax CoE, Financial Management Control, Risk & Governance directorate and across the wider central finance function. As such, it offers a chance to build relationships, to develop briefing skills using a variety of communication styles and to increase understanding of senior decision making.
The post holder will need to work accurately and be flexible and responsive to changing priorities. It will also involve the need to work closely and collaboratively with other teams across the Tax CoE (Home Office, Dept. Work & Pensions in particular) and Government Finance Function.
The successful candidate will demonstrate their ability to provide high quality, efficient and effective support to the Head of Tax CoE across the full range of his duties. You will be responsible for ensuring priorities are driven forward, progress against milestones/deliverables are monitored and communicating these effectively to the Tax CoE senior management team and wider finance function.
You will need to be well organised and assertive, professional and confident with the ability to prioritise a busy workload with conflicting priorities.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Support the Head of Tax CoE by ensuring Tax CoE delivery plans and other business planning tools are managed effectively in line with Tax CoE / MoJ / wider central finance function requirements; this includes proactively monitoring, updating and communicating actions working across departmental boundaries.
  • Preparing bilateral meetings with Tax CoE senior team, external stakeholders and HMT and HMRC to ensure all necessary business is covered and following up on all actions.
  • Supporting the Head of Tax CoE in managing his overall workload and priorities and ensuring he is fully prepared for all meetings.
  • Providing secretariat support for the key meetings as appropriate, including taking responsibility for setting agendas, taking minutes of meetings, communicating and following up on actions etc.
  • Resolving complex or difficult issues, negotiating solutions where challenges arise and exercising judgement to represent the views of the Head of Tax CoE when appropriate.
  • Taking a proactive lead in understanding the issues the Tax CoE team needs support in addressing.
  • Managing and co-ordinating corporate issues for Tax CoE on behalf of the Head of Tax CoE.
  • Providing support to the Tax CoE team in taking forward staff engagement actions.
  • Co-ordinating and managing Head of Tax CoE’s diary and providing wider business support.
  • Acting as the Information Assurance lead (IAL) for the MoJ teams, sharing information and advice as required to ensure data assets are recorded and maintained within MoJ security guidelines.
  • Acting as the Security Champion for the MoJ teams, sharing information and advice as required.
